Do it yourself powder coating
Anyone have one of them DIY Eastwood kits? I've seen em but never known anyone that's used one.
Few questions...did you use your home oven to bake it? If so, did it stink up the house and get the wifey bitching? Also, was the color uniform and evenly applied or blotchy and DIY looking for lack of a better term? |

On that topic I'd like to ask if anyone had bought or heard of Eastwoods new home Chrome plating kit. Was interested since most of Eastwood's products seem to be good IME.

Not personally but one of their guns are on my wishlist. Some guys here tried a gun from Harbor Freight ($60) and got some pretty good results with it. Uniform color the secret was getting the part clean. Unlike painting if you mess up before the part is baked you just wipe the powder off and start over. If you mess up after it's baked well that's a whole nuther ball game. As for the home ovens not really a good idea though I know some (mostly single guys) who'ev tried it. Those powders give off a whole not of nasty volitie compounds. I wouldn't want to eat anything in an oven after it had been used for Power coating. As for making the wife bitchy I guess it would rank right up there with a transmission on the coffee table.

According to the directions it's only baked for about 10 minutes or so. A cheap salvage yard oven should do the trick. Eastwood sells heat lamps but they are $300+

Got one, ain't used it yet. Got my oven cheap from Harbor Freight when they had them on sale. Big enough to do wheels in. I hope to use it this summer.
As for Eastwoods other coatings...well, I used the cad paint. My cat can shit a closer cad match than that paint did! And the metal blackening system is also a joke. It's black-oxide...or in other words, black rust. And if you don't oil it all the time, it turns to brown rust. I actually got a full refund on that product. I hope the powder coating is a better product. Dan |

Joe,Go directly through the company Eastwood buys their kits from. http://www.caswellplating.com/
There is also a forum for everything they sell so you could ask your questions there. I have never done any powder coating yet but I do use the cadium plate kits. So far all I have done is about a bizillion nuts, bolts and small parts and it is really easy once you get the hang of it. I do all of my stuff out in the garage and driveway because this stuff does put out some fumes. From what I understand a oven will help the drying or cure time. Maybe you could buy a used electric oven for the garage( dirt cheap at Salvation Army or a garage sale) and pay an electrician an arm and leg to wire the garage for 220?
