View Full Version : Octane Booster That Works as Advertised!

Been doing some testing over the last couple of months on an "off the shelf" octane booster that caught my eye. This company also makes Marvel Mystery Oil which is the lube additive I've been using in my homebrew race gases for 10+ years now.
After running a couple of dozen blends of varying concentration through the octane engines at work and several tanks through my Lightning with ZERO ill effects I figured it was safe to share....
CD-2® Off-Street Legal™
High Performance
Octane Boost
They advertise up to a 20 point (2 octane numbers) gain when blended as per the bottle directions. I've found this to be a very accurate claim & when going a bit higher on the concentration (one bottle into 10 gallons of super unleaded) the gain has consistently been between 2.5 & 3 octane numbers. Here is where it gets interesting.......
When added to a 1:3 12 gallon batch of xylene / 93 pump gas homebrew this product kicks the final blend up from a 99 R+M/2 rating to 102.5 ~ 103 octane! I've run ~10 tanks of this through my Lightning and 2 tanks through my Buick so far. I checked the plugs in the Lightning at 5 tanks & 10 tanks and have seen NO extraneous residue (orange goop) like the MMT in 104 Octane Boost will leave & they were actually a little cleaner than norm.
This product also contains an effective fuel system cleaner that works very well at dissolving any old varnished fuel residue in the tank/lines/injector tips & carbon buildup in the combustion chamber.

What's the main ingredient? What's the size of the bottle? :fragez:
Thanks! :)

Yea, and how much is it? I'm not a fan or believer in octane boosters, if looking to add a few lbs more boost, I'd favor alky or propane.

Unfortunately I can't say much of anything about what's actually in this stuff. It's a propietary blend & these companies have lawyers that are foaming at the mouth for a chance to sue someone!
I can say that it does not contain any methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl aka: MMT which is the component in 104 Octane Boost that leaves the orange-red powder all over the spark plugs, injector tips, combustion chamber & catalytic converter.
It comes in 16oz bottles & runs around $4.50 at the local Wal Mart.

Joe, like nitrous it's just another tool for going fast.... & I agree MOST of the off the shelf boosters out there are a complete waste of time. :)

That's a pretty cool test, what do you do that you have an octane machine at work??

I work in the quality control lab at a gasoline production plant / refinery. We also make alkylate (the main base chemical for quality gasolines, it usually runs around 93~95 RON & 91~92 MON), toluene, xylene, benzene, 2 oil (diesel), light cycle oil (marine diesel), etc....
The operators out in the units run the equipment/machinery that does the crude oil refining & product blending and we (lab rats) make sure those products are within specification. If an in process or finished product is out of spec we'll do some magical mathamatizing & formulazatin to try and help bring them within tolerances. ;)

Is it sensor friendly?

Is it sensor friendly?
Don't have a bottle here in front of me (work) but from what I can recall it doesn't have any warnings about sensor damage. For what it's worth, I've run 10+ bottles of this stuff through my '01 Lightning (4 catalytic coverters, OBDII, etc...) and haven't had a single problem. Spark plugs actually looked a little cleaner than "norm" for the miles on 'em when I checked after 5 bottles. :)

good info Doug.. BUT is it any better then Xylene?? I can get that for a LOT cheaper and its 117 octane.. correct?? I guess why would I spend $8 for 16 oz of this when i can buty q whole gallon of 117 octane xylene for that price??

Be sure to goggle for the stuff you're thinking of using. If you enter the chemical's name and MSD, or MSDS, you can find out what the real story is on it. MSD, is Material Safety Data (Sheet).
Some chemicals are contact poisons. Don't under estimate the damage you can suffer from not following the guide lines.

I hate to dampen everyone's enthusiasm over this stuff, but it does contain MMT. I just picked up a bottle and in small letters on the front it says "Contains MMT". Also, MMT is listed under the "DANGER" section on the back. What it doesn't say is how much of the stuff is in there. What the heck, I've already got it so I'm going to give it a try.

Oh wonderful, I need to get in contact with the manufacturer ASAP because the bottles (bought ~ 3 weeks ago at the Missouri City Wal Mart) I have here at the house make no mention of MMT on the label! I also checked the plugs on my Lightning after using 5 bottles & saw no evidence of orange goop....

Well Ladies....
After getting some more info from the manufacturer I'm going to have to change my opinion on this stuff.
They did a reformulation a few months ago (which is just starting to hit the shelves as per the CD-2 rep) & due to production costs they HAVE started using a healthy dose of MMT in this product; from .2 ~ 2 weight % as per the msds they sent me. Since MMT WILL coat your car's spark plugs, valves, combustion chamber & injector tips I am giving this product a thumbs down! :nada:
Sorry Guys, I should have checked into it deeper before saying anything.... :(

Propane + Stock 87 TR, Stock everything but power plate = 22 PSI... not bad in my book.
The GNAT will get Razor's PAC kit with the ME-R.
BTW : Razor you got that PAC Propane done yet :D
Anyway Torco makes a great octane booster. I wouldn't fool with your basic Walmart nickel - ninety five crap..LOL

I used Torco accelerator with my blown Fox body, it was great stuff except it turned the plugs red. I have never tried it with my Buicks but the Lightning and Mustang people use it all the time.
