Ok, now my ignorance will truely shine!! Sorry to have to ask, but in regards to our S2 engines, what exactly are mandrels, and what are they used for, etc.

The part that bolts on the balancer that the gears to drive the oil pump etc.

Thanks dude! I kinda was guessing that might be it. Something else to keep in mind if I decide to go dry sump :(
