In the spring I plan on detailing the underbody of my GN. I want to touch up the crossmember and a couple spots on the frame where time and oil have started to peel the paint/undercoat.

What is the best stuff to use that resembles the stock paint/undercoat? I don't need to redo the the whole crossmember just the passenger side, so I will need something that will blend also.

Thanks.

I worked on the underneath of my El Camino when I had it, cleaning and repainting. Black satin enamel or lacquer works good on the engine crossmember, just paper off the oil pan. Real undercoating is best for the frame although it will be extra shiny as it will be new. You can collect yourself some gravel dust and toss onto the undercoating to give it more of a "used" look.

Where did you get that digital boost gauge? I'm assuming it's yours..

bishir,

Actually it is just an avatar I created from a boost gauge from the Nordskog Digital Gauge site. I have a black-faced Autometer 30inHg/30psi in my GN. It was just harder to modify the Autometer picture to read 21 psi than a digital one.

Is this a garaged car or not? I like the Eastwood chassis paint. If it's a non-garaged car, I used POR-15 but I'm not a fan of it anymore. I think I'll use the Eastwood Rust Encapsulator and the chassis paint this summer.

If you want to restore the factory undercoating look, that might be a little tougher.... Not sure what your goal is.... factory exact vs. "concours"..

Never used it personally, but hear that stuff is great!

Much better chice, and less prep that if you use spray paint.

They carry undercoating remover too..

Low mileage garaged car, driven about 1000-1500 miles a year. Just basically looking to touch up the underneath, not because it is bad, because I am stickiler for detail. The outside, interior, and engine compartment are all detailed out (almost) and that leaves the trunk (trunk kit in the future) and the underneath, which is this years project.

I wonder how well this would work:

Done correctly, I doubt the rust encapsulator would *hurt* what you are trying to accomplish. It might be overkill or not needed for a low-mile , garage stored car in a fair weather climate. Ironically, these rust-products often work poorly on metal in excellent condition. That's my complaint about POR-15... it's great for rusted areas but I think it's poor for good metal.
Personally, unless you have some rust I would try the chassis paint first on a small area and see how you like it.

BTW - signup for Eastwoods email list. They are constantly sending 10% off and free shipping offers. I got one of those Hose Techniques silicone hose kits from Eastwood for $10 less than Hose Techniques was selling them online!
