Hello all,
Dave, and I am new here. Just looking for a new board to learn some about turbos. I am in the process of playing with a blo-thru/hot air on a 350'' Buick(of course). Going into a 67' tube frame GS. Like I said, I am totally new to turbos(as in NO experience at all!!!) so any help yall would like to forward would be greatly appreciated.
How about cam selection for starters ? What does a turbo set-up prefer ? Less overlap, more overlap, lean on the exhaust(as in more duration) ? Just looking for some ideas and theories from anyone interested. Just wanted my first started post to "maybe" interest someone out there.
Thanks. Now back to searching and reading posts here.

Welcome. Look around and I am sure you will be able to get the info you need. There are many people here that should be able to help you.
Welcome Dave..Your project sounds interesting. Tell us more...As of late many racers have had success with cams with more exhaust duration. I would suggest calling Tim Cole at Comp Cams and give him the specifics on your combination..HTH
PS We wanna see some pics...After doing some research here, post your cam questions in the General Tech Forum.

turbo cams have less overlap, basically so that not much boost is wasted straight into the exhaust when both valves are open. As far as duration, there are different schools of thought on that one. Higher exhaust is popular, but people have gone fast with both.

Since you said you know next to nothing about turbocharging, reading a book on the subject can only help. Searching the on-line forums can be helpful but the info is dispersed and tough to organize. Besides, the forum info is geared more toward fuel-injected applications.
Hugh MacInnes wrote a book published by HPBooks once upon a time but there might be more recent publications. (but it's still good for basic theory & those using carbs - like you)
Read up on the subject then find someone local with turbocharging experience and pick their brain. No sense in 'reinventing the wheel'.
Good luck!

can I have ur car!!!???!!! lol...Sounds like an awesome project. I have never heard anything bad about moving up the bumpstick tree!!! it seems a lot of guys have gone for some form of the 206/206, but the exhaust always seems to be bigger!

you have to admit a 11.50 hot air car is a pretty damned good accomplishment!
and there is more than a handfull of hotair cars that have hit the 11 sec. mark!
you should have respect for the hotair car because you never know the next t-type that hands you your ass could be a hotair!

and with a little N2O those 11 sec hotairs just got closer to a 10 sec car :add_schac

There is also one 10 second hot air car that I know of.

hey Davy. SO I see you over here talking to a bunch of 6 shooter boost boys. Wait until I tell... :albert: J.K. Put at least an 88mm on it. Any thing else would be too small. Maybe even a 91-96 since I have seen them with exhaust housing that work better on a v-8 setup. It realy depends on what HP you are shooting for. No overlap on the cam and a aggressive profile put in at least 4 degrees advanced. I would say somewhere around 226/226 would be in the ballpark for a v-8. I wouldn't say more exhaust but maybe a smaller intake with a more aggresive lobe and more lift. It depends on how you look at it or who you ask. What rpm range you are looking to turn. More exhaust or less intake depends on what someone thinks big or small is for a cam. v-6 guys use a little smaller A/R ratio on there turbo housing since they are working off less cubes but a turbo shop should have a chart to get the housing for you cubes and I'm sure there are a few of those guys around here. Glad to see your project is still progressing. Look forward to seeing you get it done. The Exhaust work is the fun part. :add_shit:

Hey guys,
Thanks for all the replies. I should have mentioned that Jim Burek at PAE is working on this with me. He is building the headers, turbo mounting, and doing the port work on the heads. I have NO problem with Jims work and he is a good friend of mine personally. Also, been talking to a couple can grinders and explained my set-up. I won't say much now, but I think we have a good starting point figured out now. When the specs get nailed down I will let yall know.
In regards to the set-up, and to answer a couple of yoru questions Rick. We are looking/aiming at somewhere in the mid 700 range, no cooler, then a 125-150 shot to do the cooling for us. The car is light(all S&W tube stuff) and has plenty of tire. We have been arguing about gearing lately. One side says 4.33/4.45's, the other is thinking 3.70/3.90's. 32" tire of course. Opinions ? Anywaysssssss, looking to stick the 350'' deep in the 9's with not much effort(famous last words, I know!).
Thanks again for the replies. :racer:
