Just curious,

I have been building more and more of these 3.8's over the past few years and have not seen a problem other than the rods getting out of round a bit but i think past a point these 3.8's all do that. Does anyone use the C&A V-series wide bearing? what about the ACL Duraglide? any input is appreciated.
Also does anyone see any noteable extention of life out of their engine, less grit and dirt passing by the bearings, or less wear after blocking off the oil filter bypass?

thank's

I have used King bearings for years with great results.

Are you using the Alecular Pro-Series? or just the standard replacement bearing? I have tried them in SB/BB Chevy with great results but never used them in a Buick. I have had very good luck with ACL duraglide and C&A V-series in my engines and of course the Clevite H-series. Not 1 bearing failure in the past 10 years (or any other major problem for that matter) Like i said just curious on what everyone else is using or if anyone's had problem/complaint with a certain brand

King does not make pro series bearings for Buicks(however if you call their engineering dept., they will reluctantly tell you there is no difference, if you put both types side by side for a SBC you cant tell.), I use them frequently in street/strip engines. You will have to drill the oiling holes to the correct size. FM race bearings on steel crank engines.

Cool,

It is always interesting to hear what everyone else is using. That's very interesting that King sells a bearing under two names, and tries to pass one off as a race bearing but it's the same deal. Isin't that illegal :fragez:

thank's for the input!

I just installed a set of Federal Mogul bearings. I'm not sure
how well they'll hold up, but I like the way they extend the oil groove
partially into the lower bearing. Now the rod bearings recieve oil for a
longer duration with each revolution. Kenne-Bell sells a set that are
fully grooved. Then the rod bearings always recieve oil.

Looked around on the Kenny-Bell site for the bearings your talking about, I didn't see any Buick related parts. :fragez:

Any thoughts on the grooved bearings from TA Performance?

I tried to find my catalogue, so I could give you the
part numbers. No luck there. But try this e-mail address:
kennebell@kennebell.net
They've replied to everything I've asked. :applaus:

I find calling them is much easier. These days their shop is over-run with Miatas.

Ill be installing clevite, shortly... hopefulyl my hi volume oil pump will let them alst a bit longer than 2 hours this time. Last tiem I instaleld all new bearings,a nd spun one the same day I put it together, becuase the junk stock oil pump, dotn pump enough oil, at 1500 rpm, spinning 4 tires.

Mike-

What mods does one have to do in order to run KING main/rod bearings in a performance 231ci GN motor? I bought a set about 2 years ago from RamChargers and am now ready to use them. .020/.020 crank

Thanks,

-Mark

The main bearing oil holes must be drilled, I'd use a 9/32 bit.

What is the part # for the federal/clevite 3/4 groove main bearings? Can't get a response on a post on TB.com with the same ?.

I've seen the Fed Mogul 3/4 groove beaings .. they look like art. Very Nice finnish compare to an older set I have in the box. I'm wondering what the additional 1/8th groove on the lower half does to Oil Press. overall ?? Any noticeable diff. from 1/2 grooved pcs.

Where did you see them? I checked a few weeks ago and no one had them as they weren't released yet according to NAPA.

They've been out for a long time. I have a set in my N/A pickup
engine. I have a spare set I think they're .020" under std thrust.
The advantage to these is that they provide oil to the rod bearings
for a longer duration of the crank rotation than the 1/2 groove
bearings do. You can also get full groove bearings from Kenne-Bell.
I don't know who makes the bearings for them yet, otherwise
I would've used them instead.

Local machine shop has em in stock. Sorry I can't quote part number but I can get it from them on Monday morn. The difference in appearance betweeen the FM new old stock I have on my rack and the new Fed M. pieces is like night and day.

I use Federal Mogul H-series rod and main bearings and coated Durabond cam bearings. Only my opinion here but the King bearings on the mains may be fine but on the rods I think they need something a little tougher to take hits from detenation. I have used the ACL (Canada I think) bearings and they worked pretty well!
