There are no stupid questions. Only stupid PEOPLE.

j/k ;)

The stock turbo on 86/87 is a garrett tbo348 with a .63 A/R housing. A .82 is also available but the GNs were all .63 AFAIK.

I just picked up an 86, and it goes GOOD, but I don't know a lot about turbos. Is there an easy way to identify the stock turbo? It does say Garrett on it, but is there a way (without taking it a part) to identify the turbo?

www.gnttype.org in the resources section has a photo guide, which has a photo guide of turbochargers including the stocker. It will at least help you figure out if you have a stock-appearing turbo, if not bone-stock.

Thanks for the link. Time to go stare at my turbo until it starts to look different than the others !!!

How about taking some pictures of it and posting them. The stocker and TA49 look almost the same, thats why its called stock appearing because it has a garrett exhaust housing. The best way is to physically measure the compressor and exhaust wheel

Yea, there is something about one of the compressor wheels having douple vanes but from the outside there really aren't any giveaways. And btw, that is one of the best questions that is ever asked about what turbo came stock. Not many people know the answer but alot of people have them and get asked every once in a while by non TR people who think they are morons for not even knowing what turbo is on their car.
