Ok...I got a call from my machinist....he said one of two things....for 500 more smackeroo's, he can port them out pretty big, 3 angle valve job, something about grinding the bowls, or blending...i forget....bronze valve guides, manley sever duty 1.77 and 1.50's, ummm...cut the pedestals for the roller rockers, 100 lb springs, and polish it all up, plus a nice 2 coat universal red to match my block....total: 1000 in all. Sound good to you guys?

BTW, he will have flow numbers for me after he gets his $$$ that i can post in like, ummm a year.....lol

What does everone else have done to their heads? Any recommends?

The ports in the buick stock are so small its almost funny, makes you wonder how buicks make so much power. When I did my heads did use manley valves, lots of bowl work to blend, gasket match, cleanup to bowl and the good seals and bronze guides.

From what my machinist told me any more work wasn't worth the gains with stock casting.

Almost forgot paid 600 cd (485 us) not inc valves or springs.

That sounds about right!! I think the valves are like, 50 bux? My total investment into the heads will be 925. They are giving me some cash back too when it is all done, because I won a bet, so....They will be cheaper!!! HAHAHAHA!!! Anyway....They are porting them out basically for race purposes....As far as they can go. The owner of the shop built his son a 1987 GN, and that kid ran 11.70's after the work they had done. Supposedly they had stock cam, stock turbo???, stock pistons, just major port-work  , exhaust, chip, injectors, pump, and I think that was it....I still think he had a diff turbo in the car, but they bought it from someone who had work done to it, and maybe they thought it was a stock unit....Car is gone now, so I will never know, but the timeslips are hanging in the garage :deal: !!! I wish I had that car!!! lol

Buy either the cast or aluminum GN heads dont waste money hoping you will get a good port. Learned the hard way with my sbc stuff, guys hand porting cant compete with a cnc machine and a good program. The time needed to get it right won't be spent on your 1000 dollor complete head job, but Ill bet gn spent the time on there programs and you are almost there dollor wise.

alum 1600
cast iron 1100 last time I called and no core charge.

I picked up my GN1 heads for $850 and they have been ported beyond stock.

I paid $1,600 for my GN1's... and $450 for a set of roller rockers. BTW the stocker rocker arms will work on them if you don't want to spring for the extra dollars.

I see some good deals on the GNTType TRader from time to time.

I initially did the same deal you are considering now. Enlarging the stock ports to the Felpro intake gasket, larger valves, bronze guides, new springs, retainers ect. $1,000

The GN1s were a performance enhancement right out of the box. IMO they are the only way to go... but I can see why someone else would want to go the other route $$$$ investment wise.

A friend of mine had a set and was having tuning issues, not able to get a consistant tune. He runs in TSM. He wanted more consistancy and switched back to his ported iron heads. He is running 10.6 on them and still seems to get a little quicker each time out. He ran across them used and sold them to me for what he had in them. They are an older set, prone to cracking, that have cracked and been welded by Champion. :add_schac
