Hey all....I am getting a Hot Air into the 11's, and after that, I am getting it behind the tape for car shows!!! What I would like is to put some subs (15's) in the car somewhere...What is the best placement? Lots of vibrations everywhere, and I dont want to fill the panels, or add any weight to the car whent he stereo is out (when I run my 11's!!!).....

Anyway...so...where do the subs and amps go :albert: :dong: ???

oh yeah....any reccommendations as to what head-unit? I am kinda partial to pioneer when it comes to audio equipment, but I am open to any recommendations, especially when i cant afford too much!

John,

15" subs are going to be huge and make alot of thump !! I only run a single 10" MB Quart and it is plenty of bass for me.

I placed my box underneath the package tray in the trunk and then had it fire "backward" into the trunk. The trunk acts like a chamber that will help resonate the bass.

The head unit I use is a Pioneer Premier 5xx (can't recall exact model) which is great since there is a separate subwoofer channels out the back along with Front and rears. And the Subowoofer controls and LPF are built in as well.

15s need a lot of cubic feet. Go with some 10s or 12s sealed box in the trunk and mount amp directly to the box. Head unit Kenwood all the way!

Yes, as wally and I know, 15's are too big for a buick. They only sound good in a large box sitting in your back seat. No one in their right mind would drive around with 15's in their back seat. 10's would be the best IMO.

Also, do a search for that GN that used to compete about 10 years ago. I think it only had 4 speakers total. No subs.

Except for us…with a sealed box speakers typically require less cubic feet but you need to throw more power at them. By the way I have a box with two 15s for sale $100 + shipping.

I was seriously considering molding the subs intot he rear seat (have two sets of lear seigler seats), and making a sick ass looking system....But then I tought I could get more $$$ selling the seats and buying a box to go in, and coe out when I wanna race! Soooo...what do you think of putting speakers into the seats?

I think it's been done before. You take out the back seat and build a box in it's place. It's the only way to get good sound in a g-body. You will never get 15" to work in your trunk. I would go with 3 10's in place of the back seat.

I exp with some band pass boxes in the trunk with 10" and 12" subs. They could hit some good lows but they couldn't punch you in the back like 3-10's behind your seat would.

Ive got 3 10" JL Audio's on the rear shelf. You dont need 15's to make a Regal rattle:)

How did you get 10" to fit on a 8" deck? Got any pic's?

broke1
03-02-2005, 03:54 PM
Thats bigger than an 8" high deck in the trunk.Dunno exactly but its more than 1 foot.

Not to sound like an ass but ive yet to see a stereo installed on any tb forums that matches mine on install or equipment.Except xtant regal:)

IMO You start putting those ****in nasty looking door panels in the car, youve runied it!!!!Thats what wave guides and q forms are for.

Sorry for the pic getting cut off, dont know why it did it http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v436/broke1/ffb6872b.jpg

Also with wave guides and/or aftermarket kicks, you dont need rear fill anymore.Pull the speakers to let the subs vent into the inside of the car.

I think you two are talking about two different things when you say the 'deck'. I think Archie is referring to the area where the third taillight sits and the 4x10s are under. Broke1, you are talking about the raised portion or the trunk itself.

This was in my car back when the previous owner had it. I opted not to take it because it made the car cheaper, and I have a stereo in the DD. Not to sound like an ass myself, but the only place this system is inferior is that he chose those whoppin' 8" subs :add_wegbr

I used to have the Pioneer DEH 6300, witht he multi-graphic display (indy cars, dolphins, eagle landing, so on...) and I was real proud of the sound, but that was on a 4 speaker system, no subs. The best experience I had with subs was with the JVC kameleon, flip face. Had two 10" MTX Road thunders that kicked ass and never popped, with a 600 watt 2 channel alpine amp from my bro as a hand-me-down!!! lol..that was in my 86 regal limited, and it vibrated so bad, i got sick of it and sold it all!!!

I want a system that looks like it belongs in the car, and sounds even better! So, even if I opt for 10's in the trunk on the raised portion, what head unit is fair and sounds good with the subs?

Now you're talking. There are a couple pics of mine at http://members.aol.com/jtesta1966/stereo.htm

I have ID CD2Comps, Qforms in the doors with Kenwood KPC1600 midbasses, 12" RF SPP128's with membrains. I did the install myself, and, sorry, but it rivals yours as it is all "installed" an isnt a box sittin on the lege.

FWIW, going from memory, the box can be 11x11x43. I might have the width wrong, but like I said, its from memory when I did use a box...prolly 12+ years ago

Jim,I like your system but your install isnt even close. You shouldve recessed the WG's further back and you shouldnt have put those door pods in.Only hing that looks out of place in mine is the Alpine cd player.

Bet my sound quality is alot better too.158db's

But yes, your sub box install is cleaner,I like to pull mine out of the car:)

I couldnt fit anything of merit behind CSII covers, kick panels werent even an idea at the time, I didnt want to cut the floor as it was a 24/7 driver, so I went the "pod" route. 158db? Dayummmm! Best I hit was 141 in 501-1000. What class you run? 501-1000? or 1001+? And there is no box in my trunk :)

Got any pics? I like to see nice stuff. You see that "Hybrid-T" in the gallery? That thing looks real nice. Not close to stock appearing, but excellent work.

Love to see how you did your stuff.

PS: Waveguides couldnt go back more, theyre 1/2 from the fusebox under the dash, and I already had to cut out the heater box on the pass side. Rotomounts that USD had were piezo's at the time (didnt care for them), and I didnt want the drivers pointing down as they are very large. Somewhere around 5-6" around and 3-4" high. Dont forget, mine was done around 1990 or so. It *was* cuttin edge at the time and was a demo vehicle for my friends shop. Other than that....shame on me :)

WOW, I didn't know SQ was measured in DBs :zahn: I always thought that was for the bass heads.

I have since removed my install - these cars were never easy...They can be done very unobtrusive and clean with some work and creativity.

I have never been afraid to alter a car so that makes it a little simpler...

I just ASSumed he had the wrong terminology and meant db as in a DB Drag competition. Kinda weird because I thought the IASCA record was like 160db... but I been out of it a long time

HA HA behind in the times old man :hahaha: (me too...been out of the comp scene since 96 or7)

They're rubbing up against 170 now (maybe more - I was never a bass head)

Probably at about 175+....

Ill get some more pics soon,I recently installed a xtant x1001 on my subs and moved my Punch 601s to my MB Quart's.Supposedly 1800 watts to 7 speakers, itll chatter your teeth when you sit in the vehicle and the sq is amazing, the high $$$ Quarts like ALOT of power, they dont bottom out at all....

any pics Broke1? I cant wait to get some gear together for the Buick!!! Ideally, I would like to mount two 12" or maybe 15" subs IN the seats....Have them molded into the back of the seat....I have a set of speare lear seigler seats that I wouldnt mind molding in a pair of speakers into...I think it would look sweet as hell!!! Put the amps right on that shelf in the trunk....could look real supurb....I have never seen it done before, and I would love to give it a try!!!

The shelf isnt that good a spot because you;d have to mount the amps upside down which is bad. You'd be sending all the heat into the board and away from the heat sinks. If you can fit them there right side up somehow it would work though...

If I am going to butcher these seats, I am going to make it look real nice. What I think I can do, is make a slanted platform for the amps to go on an angle up the shelf, and make a nice form with lexan to show off the backs of the speakers above the amps....The amps would be mounted like so: \

So picture this: Two 15" subs inside the rear seat, facing the interior. Magnest in the tunk...using composite or particle board, make a \ shelf for amps, and dress up real nice with a carpet kit and some lexan!!! How does that sound?

I still think 3 10" would put out more sound but I am also behind the times.

The design sounds good to me. How about using free air subs? The theory behind free air subs is they would use your truck as the enclosure. You could mount them to a vertical board, perimeter sealed, behind the seats and the trunk is your enclosure…lots of cubic feet there. In theory it sounds good but I do not know.

being fresh to the scene, I have never head of free air subs...got pics? I just wanted somthing that has never been done, and is also esthetically appealing. I am not going for a record of 175 bd, or something like that...I just want the neighbors to know I am home, and be able to blast some 1990's dance music at wed night cruises, or friday night races. I want this car to show....Not in competition for sound quality, just classic car shows. being that it is a very limited production car (2100 t-types in 84) and nearing that 25 year mark, I can get it into shows very easily when it is complete...I want it to look professional, sophisticated, fast, and most of all.....FUN!!!

I think 12's or 15's through the leather of the lear seats in the rear, two amps in the trunk, a nice trunk lining to dress up, and a good head unit for the interior will complement this set-up.

Thanks for all the input all!!!
