I had a turbonetics on my car. I sent it to Cotton to have a new .63 housing put on it and the USPS helped me out by kicking the thing up the mass pike :(

Still have it and other than 2 turbine fins slightly bent it's great no endplay whatsoever.

I will be going back to turbonetics soon if the 51 doesn't work up to my expectations.

The Cheetah turbos came along before their time. They got a bad rap right off the bat of being very laggy when most people were still running stock torque converters. That, coupled with the fact that Turbonetic's PR is almost non existent kind of made them the darkhorse in the Buick world.

That and nobody can figure out there stupid naming system for their turbos.
If someone says they have a Stage three turbo for sale, what the hell is that? Is that like a TA 60 or a 76? It sounds big but I think a stage four is only like a 51 or 52 in comparable size.

I have never heard of any complaints regarding durability or performance, but I have no way of comparing them to other turbos

What size is a stage 3 cheetah ? (I was told by someone it was the same as a 49) Is that true?
I have one on my car.
Thanks

I think it's just a little more than a 49, more like a TE-44. I checked the turbo comparison section at gnttype.org and they list a minimum recommended injector size as 50lb. I have another question for all you guys on this topic (I'll try not to highjack this thread too bad). I work for a company that recently picked up turbonetics as a vendor and will be purchasing a turbo from them in the short future. My combo will be a Turbonetics stage 3 with ball bearing center section, 50lb injectors, powerstroke FMIC, alky injection, 3000 stall converter, translator and 3 1/2" MAF and ATR downpipe w/external WG. I drive my car every day to and from work. It's 85% street 15% race. My question is should I go with the .82 or the .63 AR turbine housing? I've got boxed lower rears and tubular upper rears w/rod ends and 275 tires (hopefully to be 295s soon) If it's not wet out it hooks like crazy and I was thinking that with the FMIC I should go with the .63 in case I have to jump on it on the street, but with the BB center would I be better off with the .82? I know it's a long post, but I want to make the right decision when I order the turbo.

Thanks in advance. :anbet: :anbet:

Iceman,

A Cheetah Stage III would be equal to a T04B Super H / T3 Stage III.

Adam,

If you are going with a BB turbo, a .82 A/R would allow you more top end. I would suggest this for your combo.

Hope that helps!

Turbonetics, thank you for your reply but no one in the Buick community knows what that equates to. The imports are more into those specs, but not the Buick guys for the most part. If you let us know what "common" GN turbo it equates to, more folks would be likely to get it.

Just a suggestion.

I called Cotton's performance, told Jack what I wanted, and let him figure out their numbering. I'm very happy with the Turbonetics turbo I have. I wont be buying anything from PTE for along time due to the problems I had with their turbos and bad customer service.

No one is saying there is anything wrong with their products. In fact it is well known that they make great turbos. Its just that no one can compare them because they dont list wheel sizes

Taffy,

Part of the problem is alot of other companies like to hide behind "model" numbers to keep some of the mystique in the combos.

But those descriptions I mentioned are all standard turbo speak, and have been used for ages.

We don't really have anything to hide and love to share information with enthusists.

Hope that helps!

Dave, good to see you guys still supporting the "turbo" market at Irwindale. The drift event was huge!!

I can not remember his name, but the guy with the RB25 in his 240sx was a really good guy to talk to. My RB25 powered 240sx will be out soon!! See you guys at more events!!

As for the turbos, maybe you could educate the less educated on the Turbonetics turbos? We are more accustomed to the mm, trim, and sixz of the inlets than "Stages".

Thanks for helping further the Buick cause!!!!

I really don't have anything to add to this discussion other than pointing out Taffy has an awesome avatar. :anbet: Yeah, the cheeta turbos don't get much love. Don't hear much about them in the Buick community so I went with the old reliable TE44.

I have a Turbonetics on my car. It is an awsome turbo. Very quick spool, even with my FMIC. All stock actuator and solenoids. Excellent quality.

I had a Stage 4 on my old GN with a stock converter and it pulled real good. It was a nice low 12 second turbo. The problem with the Cheetahs as far as I know is the wheels are not as effecient as a 49/44 so it will not make the same HP and heats the air more at higher boost levels. That may have been the early Cheeatahs and they may have changed it but I can't confirm that.
