Has anyone ever done it? If so, how is it? Looks like a LOT of fun.
....hmmmm....I wonder how th old TTA would do? :cowboy:

UNGN participates in it every year with a 502 powered Pontiac 2+2.
Read some of his posts on TB.com on it, they are pretty interesting

I think the TTA would do fine in the short term, but I wouldnt run any stock engine for hundreds of miles under high boost. You would be WOT for hours
I would go the n/a route. I am sure some would disagree but I believe in lots of boost for short spurts (1/4) and n/a for looooonnnnnnnggg runs.

How long of a run are we talking about? Which cars do the best......Vipers, vettes, Porsches....stuff like that?

In the last Silver State 03 Cobras did just fine running with boost. I say go for it!

TTA 850 Steve may chime in if he's registered. He has a hardtop car that was equipped with 2.77 gears for the classic if my memory serves me correctly. An egt meter will definately be in order to run there I think. SC Cobras do not have to worry about melting a turbine( just over spinning the blower). A 6speed TTA would be a hell of a runner out there.

There is a big difference between 20+ pounds of boost and 10-11. Plus that is a brand new engine not one that is 14 years old.
You might make it with a heavy duty oil cooler and trans cooler and the appropriate gauges to match. That turbo would get the oil mighty hot

I have run that race a bunch and won twice, what do you need to know? If you are gonna run a automatic trans in that race you need to makes sure it locks up in OD or you will be burning up the trans.
The course is 90 miles long. I recently ran a Ford Lightning there and blew up the motor by running 12# of boost. We made it about 37 miles in, and let me tell you, it ain't fun sitting in the desert for four hours in black fire suit.

Was the only mod a pulley and exhaust on the Lightning, or was it built? What is stock boost, around 8?

Yup my TTA #884 was run in that race by the original owner and aside from safety mods the only performance mods were 2.77 gears and blue top injectors(I assume it needed more fuel with the increased load of 2.77's and running it out on top end).
I dont have much info on how the car did,and if anybody knows or can find out I'd really appreciate it,but was told the car was raced in the early 90's(up to at least 94 which is when it was pictured in Hot Rod for being in that race)in I belive the unlimited class and was supposed to have run either 156 or 159mph average with top end speeds at or over 180mph.

The owner of the truck put on all the JDM stuff. Exhuast, 4# pulley, intake, K&N, reprogram of the ECM. I am not sure what the stock number on the Lightning are, but at 160mph we were at 12#, 5600 rpm when the detonation took over.
The truck dynoed at 440 rwhp and 456 lb/ft of torque. That thing was a monster for sure and a bit of a handful at speed.

Thats interesting, Steve. How has you engine held up? Has it been rebuilt? It ran 180 with only gears and injectors, no other mods?

Basically the race is a 90 mile stretch of road in the Nevada desert. They close highway 318 and then launch the cars every 60 seconds for the higher classes and then every 30 seconds for the lower speeds. The speeds range from 95 to 170 and then they have an unlimited class that consists of full blown race cars. Full cage, fuel cells, fire systems, etc...
You are placed in your class based upon experience and more importantly, what kinda safety equipment you have in the car and on your body.
The car set up in terms of chassis is different than when I road race.

SteveTo run in the unlimited class your car would need a feul cell, full NASCAR style cage, fire system , etc. I don't know how your car is modded.
The maximum top speed with a roll BAR is 165 mph.

Hairdrier, the original motor was hurt early on probrobly due to a fuel issue or lack there of but I havent taken the original shortblock apart to see what happened to it(it came with the car). The current motor runs excellent and has turned a best 1/4 of 13.37 and best mph of 106.That was on pumpgas on the cars only outing to the track.
Racer X, I know the car had at least a 10 point cage in it.I dont know what other equipment was in the car at the time, after all it was raced some 10+ years ago.I was told it finished 5th in the unlimited class one year with that 156 or 159mph average.I cannot verify any of this though except for the fact that it was run and was mentioned(w/picture)in a 1994 issue of Hot Rod magazine.I think though if it was limited to 165 then it would suck to run a TTA in it as a good running stocker should run 170+.

SteveCool! Just finishing in the Unlimited class is an achievment. A lot of cars break at those sustained speeds.
As far as "only" getting to run 165, it's pretty fast considering you're on a crowned road and not a professional track. Two years ago I ran and could only get my Vette up to 140 due to the 50-75 mph crosswinds  That had my bottom hole clenched pretty tight! :zahn:

lol I guess your right, its one thing going 165 on a prepped track and trying to go 165 on a crowned road,Never really thought of it that way.

I don't think anyone has mentioned it yet, but since we are talking about the SSC, there is a video of a 200 mph t-type on gnttype.org, I guess it is a clip from ESPN 2s coverage of the 1998 SSC. The link to the video is here

It's a 90 mile long(I think)open road race on a stretch of Nevada highway. There are quite a few websites about this type of racing and talking about different classes.

That was one of the reasons I didn't bring my GN here to Germany. I wasn't too comfortable with how it'd do under long runs of sustained boost. Plus, I'd have to do a lot of other things to make it comfortable for me to drive on the Autobahn.
However, a few weeks ago I took a rented Passat with turbo diesel all the way to Munich and back (about 4-5 hours). The car didn't have a boost gauge so I can't say what I was pulling but I could safely say it was in the boost for most of the trip doing speeds between 100 and 135 mph. If I remember right, I was upwards of 3500 - 4000rpm in 6th gear Granted, that was also a rented car and no telling how it was after I dropped it off. :fragez:
Would love to try the SSC someday. It's on my list. :eclipsee:
