In the 3800 engine series they used what was called a *Fast Start* iginition setup. Instead of using the single shutter on the crank balancer, they used 2. One with three shutters and then one with 18. This allowed the ignition module to figure out what coils to first with the first of shutter signals from the 3 shutter rather then waiting for a cam synch signal.

Soooo.

The guys in OH, have done this.
Took the shutter rings off of a 3800 balancer, and installed them on a GN balancer. Still a WIP, but this was the hard part. Next is wiring and seeing if the cam sensor uses the same leading/trailing edge sensing, as the 3800.

Interesting Bruce. You think this will yield better results than the device Caspers electronics was testing last winter? I believe that doodad simulated a crank signal to get faster spark

Arn't they different sizes or spaces or something? seems to me I saw some where that the 3800 used different sized gaps or something so that the engine didnt have to make that first revolution. (I think this is you) does the 749 have the capabillity of this?:kopfkratz

I don't know about your TR but mine fires right up after I switch on the fuel pump after I have oil pressure. I don't see a need..

I don't know what he was doing.

The fast start uses an inner ring with three shutters in it, sort of like the GN, but then uses an outter ring that has 18 shutters in it. So by reading which way they overlap the module can tell which coil pack to fire.

The signals are a given within the GM world. Ref Hi, ref low, DRP, and EST are givens.
And I'm already running the 749 in DIS, which was the trick. Switching from Distributor to DIS took alot of research.

Then there is no need for you to consider it. Lots of people are happy with the stock chip, for others it's not even close. There were two reasons that GM made the switch, lower emissions, and customer complaints. There were lots of people that complained of the slow starting, again just a matter of what someone finds acceptable.

Staging lanes, big injectors, fan having run so the battery's a little low, and you might find yourself unhappy some time.

And the next phase of this is running a coil near plug set-up, and that does change things. Having run an eDist and LS1 coils, I know what a good ignition system is on a GN. Yes, folks have gone fast with the stock setup, but the level of error to do so is extremely tight.

How about marketing an LS1 style ignition kit for TR's, or is it too complicated for us dummies

F.A.S.T. sells the eDist, and I've posted how to use it with the TRs on another board, and showed pics of it at my web page.

I'm not in the parts business, so all I do is just show various things that I've done, and how I've done them.

If you want a how-to, or have more guestions, just ask, but you'll have to make up your own harness, and gather the connectors if you go the eDist way.
