Okay, I hadn't heard of E85 before and read a little about it there. I notice that it's available in my area.......is this stuff any good?

E85 can be bought at the "pump". Use E85 instead of methanol? We need input from the alky experts (Steve, Razor).

It would be very similar to denatured alcohol. Probably would not work quite as well, but close. You could actually call E85 denatured alcohol because it's ethanol that has been denatured with a little gasoline. The stuff you would buy at Home Depot is ethanol that has been denatured with a little methanol.
If E85 is cheaper and easier for you to obtain than denatured or methanol, I would try it. Let us know how it works!

I think it would work and will try it once it becomes available near me. I got blasted for asking this question on TBS.com because of compatibilty issues. Something about fuel and plastics, especially inside the Shurflo pump. Almost every seal I can think of is compatible with fuel, but when I asked for the Shurflo pump # to check the seals, it got quite.

I'm no chemist. The words probably can work.. should work.. could work.. all are guesses at best. Becuase until someone has runit for at least a year.. its all bout guesses.
The question is will it work? Will the system components have issue? Now or latter? And will it yield the performance level your looking to attain.
I dont have E85 near me to test, and I really dont want to use my car a guinea pig when I have methanol sourced really cheap. And it works. The pump used is the 8000-543-236 and it is an insecticide pump. Can it work???? Sure.. for how long.. :albert: The seals and housing should.
As the Life cereal commercial said.. I'm not going to try it.. you try it. That also goes for using hydrogen peroxide, acetone, nitromethane, etc...
Call me a calculated Mike'
Sorry I dont have the answer your looking for. Shurflo is going to tell you theyre pump is not compatible.. well depends who you talk to.

E85 is 85% ethanol and 15% 87 octane, netting a total of 105 octane ( this is what the engineer at Citgo said over the phone to me ) I was planning on converting my 69 GTO to E85 but eventually decided against it.
E85 does not have nearly as many btu's as regular gas. It needs 40% more E85 to create the same power, so thats 40% more fuel pump and injector.
You can NOT fill this up in your gas tank and expect to get more than a mile away. You will lean out your motor big time and eventually kill tons of motor and fuel system parts.
This stuff is all over IL and costs around $1.90 a gallon. I would suspect that this would be better than denatured and less effective than straight meth due to E85's low btu levels.
Razor, I plan on getting 2 kits from you shortly. If you could look into this it would seal the deal for me as I have 2 of these stations near by and 19 total in IL with more on the way.
If anything, have AMS try it
Those crazy guys eat Life Cereal all the time over there. :add_wegbr
