My buddy and I did a few Spring Cleaning jobs on my 150K+ '87 GN and one of them was chaning out the tranny fluid and filter. Although not brown, it needed to be changed and the car was apparently shifting fine until then, although it was not a track car or street racer. Anyway, first thing I noticed was there were two O rings stuck in the trans when I pulled the filter out. I pulled them out and installed the new filter with it's own O ring.
But after putting the pan on and filling up with Dex III, my friend who was working on 2 other cars at the time (he's a master ASE in about 6 things.) asked me if I pushed the filter in 'all the way'. I said what do you mean? He asked if it went past a detent I should have felt. I know that it didn't. Although he's not intimately familiar with the TRs, he's an excellent tech. Anyway......the car since then has been slipping I think 2-3 or maybe 1-2?....Could the filter be 'hanging' to suck in air? Anyone run across problems with an improperly installed filter? (i.e...not pushed in all the way up )? Thanks guys

It Must be Pushed Up past the detent. You push up & will know when its in. It may well be just hanging sucking air if your getting slippage now! I know it sucks but check it. Put in a drain plug when you have the pan off for future use.
