My 2004R is not in good shape, and I have a reverse VB 400, that is race prepped. I am thinking of making the swap, and wonder how it works with the stock rear end ratio. Those who have swapped, do you stick with it, or move to a different gear?
My car, once finished will be a mid 10 second car, and I may not even need the 400, but I do have it sitting there, and think it would be neat to use.
Disclaimer: I don't plan on driving it on the street for long distances, and I know that the 2004R can be pushed (with good internals) at least or if not further than I plan on ever going with the car.
That being said, how do these conversions tend to do, and those who have converted, are you happy with what you have achieved?
Thanks,

I run a TH400 and have been happy with it.It is almost the same length as the 2004R and the distance between the bellhousing and the trans mount is identical so it should swap right in(at least it did on mine just had to shorten the driveshaft 3/4" and change the yoke, ended up breaking that driveshaft and the alum one I replaced it with - now have a 3" chrome moly :D ).
As for gearing,I'd leave the 3.42's along.I've been running 3.08's the last two years with good success and am switching to 3.42's(along with a lockup conversion)in a quest for low 10's.It shouldnt run out of rpm unless something is wrong.

Isn't it suggested that you change the 1st gear ratio in the 400 when doing a swap into one of our cars? Something about 1st gear being too tall??
How about a Turbo 350? Smaller, lighter?

Actually last time at the track I was discussing this with Eric from Dynotech and he said he's typically found that cars seem to 60ft and ET better with the TH400's 2.48 first gear.He said something about not shocking the tires as hard and keep the car in first longer.
Also I think with the amount of torque our motors make it's hard to run a gear thats too tall - look at my car with 2.48 first and 3.08 rear gears still gets consistant 1.47-1.49 60fts :D

The main concern with this conversion, is that I have a race prepped 400, ready to go......probably would prefer a 350. To be honest, I do believe a properly "built" 2004R would be best, since it retains O.D.
With my 200 going out, and having the 400 just sitting there, it is quite tempting.

I did the swap. Im very happy. much cheapper than a 200 and i dont have to worry at the track. If money was no issue , sure get one of them 3k 200s.But for a mostly strip/street car with no highway driving ,400 is it. My car has done nothing but gone faster and faster with it.Nothing fancy in it, high element sprag, basic frictions and a transbrake. Just my opinion.

How much of a weight penalty is there with a 400 vs a 200?
I have a :fragez: Is your 400 a BOP tranny?
If you decide to go with a 200 I have a bruce tolles street strip w/ 10 passes for sale. I'm going w/ the 400 myself. i'm asking 2400.00 complete w/ 3400 tcs converter, and art carr cast deep pan. no core required.i will sell w/o converter for 2000.00.
By the way i really like the new forum much better than TB.com, Keep up the good work.
