Hey guys,
I just bought an 84 t-type a few days ago...I own a 65 plymouth and a 68 chevelle thus as you can see i am completely lost on how to work on the 3.8 turbo motors. this car is stock as far as i know so i figured i would start by putting in a performance fuel pump, cold air kit, 160 thermo, maybe 30 pound injectors, blocking off coolant lines to throttle body, and a mild chip like a 93 octance chip...also what is the cheapest way to make these cars intercooled? when i bought the car the guy said the boost was reaching 18 pounds and told me not to "floor" it or drive it hard so a head gasket won't blow how do i turn this boost down try to give me details or a website with diagrams or something i need help i want to get on this girl and see what it has. what is a coil pack? is that where all the spark plug wires go to like a distributor cap? How can i tell if it is good? thanks guys for everything hope to hear from you soon

"what is a coil pack? Is that where all the spark plug wires go to like a distributor cap?"
Yeah. And buy bigger injectors so you dont double buy. I have NO experience with '84 gn's (yet) but maybe a scanmaster would be the best thing to buy first.
Heres a good link... GNTTYPE.ORG

B4 you blow the crank out of the block, I'd suggest you get up w/ some of the more experienced TR owners around your area. There's a BUNCH more than just a coilpack to consider B4 standing on the gas... :add_wegbr
I think there's a Central Il club that's around the Peoria/Pekin area. :zahn: :zahn:

there is allot of things you can do with your hot air... congrats and welcome to the 3.8 hotair comunnity...as a fellow former n/a muscle car owner i will give you my 2 cents
i like the fact that i have a hot air car just because the cool air guy always thing your car is slow... you have some good ideas for your next steps.. this is a simple formula it is standard for most engines but critical for ours... (fuel+air x boost) flow/traction=speed
octane the higher the octane the higher the flashpoint. you need the higher octane because the more you compress the fuel and air charge the more combustable it becomes and if the engine's heat causes the charge to ignite prematurly that is called knock or predetonation.. knock kills our engines... thus the more boost you run the more octane or more fuel you have to run...you should get a quality knock gauge
that being said go with larger than 30 lb injectors i run 42lbs (you can get them off turbo thunderbirds) and they are a direct fit. you should invest in an adjustable fuel presure regulator too. check on the board for suggestions on what psi to run
if you are running 18lbs of boost and stock injectors you should be running race gas. race gas will kill your stock o2 sensor most people who run race gas convert over to a heated o2 sensor you can get an adapter from caspers electronics. you can also run a lead resistant Denso unit like i do you can get them from www.Arizonagn.com. or just turn you boost down to about 12-13 lbs get a good quality boost gauge too the stock one sucks..
porting.... port every part on you intake and exhaust that you can get away with. there are numerous do it yourself porting proceedures out there especially on http://www.rennie-macintosh.com/ (aka the turbo regal site) this site has every thing you want to know about our cars... the manifold on the hot air cars is the weak link in the motor if flows like crap and if you port it its better but you have to be carefull because it may not flow evenly any more there are a few people out there who have made some really nice modded manifolds but you will pay for them. if you get yours porteds get it flow tested if possible.. i ported mine and it seems to be ok but i'm not 100% sure. champon heads are really great bolt ons the iron ones flow very well and the aluminum ones are killer but expect to pay a good chunk for them. the best deal i've found is at www.jaysgn.com Jay is a good guy.
exhaust.. go with the biggest, highest flowing exhaust you can find... most people bypass the cat but that is illegal and i would never, i say never condone such a thing :joint: wink wink... i'll post more later.. gott get to work... :frech:

Thanks guys for all the help
i have two more ?
How do i turn the boost down?
Can these cars be made into intercoolers?
Wagondraggin

YES THEY CAN BE INTERCOOLED but htere is allot of plumbing that goes into it...t there are kits available. or you can buy all the cool air parts off ebay... either way it is expensive and the kits are UGLY!!!!!!! stay hot air man.. be a rebel like the rest of us...
if you stay hotair you can buy a very simple methanol/water injection kits that esentially acts as an intercooler and cost so much less. i'll pm you my noumber if you wanti'll help you answer any other questions you may have...

normal isnt very far from where we are at......we live in mt. zion....its right next to decatur...bout 30 min. from spfld.
So like throttle body....can you do any porting to the stock throttle body and be fine on these t types or would it hurt it?

port until your heart's content won't hurt a bit... you may have to get a new butterfly made most places will do that for you.

Bore out the throttlebody. You can go all the way up to 62mm, however, there is a little part on one of the sides nearest the turbo that oftern gets breached, or punched through. There isnt a lot of material on the TB as you get closer to the turbo, so be very careful when boring it out...Remember, the bigger, the better. As for the exhaust, you get what you pay for. ATR 3" is the best set up, but the most expensive. I own a Mease 3" down pipe, and a 3" dump tube. The dump eliminates having to buy anything bigger than stock from the cat back, because I wont need it, hoever, if you wanna stay emissions legal, go with ATR. Forget flowmaster.
The intake is a common porting modification. I Win Engineering ported mine out and they ground down the EGR hump (looks like this-^ where the turbo goes intot the intake) It is ground down smooth and the hole for the egr is plugged with solid rubber. It helps to flow the air more directly, and more evenly.
The injectors, depending how fast or how much....I am debating between MSD's 55lb, or the new 65's from Ken Mosher. Either way, It all depends how fast you are willing to go and how much you wanna spend.
Obviously you need a walbro 340 pump, an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, a chip for what mods you decide on, and some damn good guages. Check the sticky on the top of the hot air forum and see the basic build up sheet, and that is where you should get started. After that, $$$, and tuning!
Headers are good intot he 12's, but are prone to cracking. Postons are popular, along with their crossover pipe, and get the ATR Up-Pipe, because if yours has not cracked yet, it will!
If you ever think about upgrading your turbo, look into the Ta33. It is a hot air special, made by taking the stock tubo and making it all bigger on the inside. It is a direct bolt on by John Craig. If not his 33, then Precision Turbo announced last year, it's own Hot Air turbo, the TA48. It is basically the 33, but I dont think it is as powerful, or popular...yet....
After you decide how fast and how much to spend, it is all a matter of getting the right parts,a nd tuning that car. If you just want 13's or high 12's, you may not even need half the stuff I listed...But tuning is 100% essential to any good 1/4 mile time. Bar non. Good luck!
