I got on RR's online help, and here's what one of the brainiacs said:

Mark: Small icon/signature files and such
Mark: I'm putting them in the root directory.. and others can't see them.
Nicholas B.: You will want to make you main page the index page and then build the site accordingly.
Mark: Even just to link to a pic I FTP up to the server?
Mark: I don't have an index.html, and I only need it to store small files.
Nicholas B.: This would be in the creation of the site and here at technical chat we do not support this. You should be able to link to an FTP directory too.
Mark: Is there a certain directoryor something I need to place them?
Mark: I'm not creating a site - just want to link to a picture file. (jpg) from my space..
Mark: Who can answer this for me?
Nicholas B.: No the reside in the folder path you put them into.
Mark: Ok.. thanks.
Nicholas B.: A web specialist.
