Just tossing out a question. Has anyone tried gearing a TTA with 3.42s like the TRs have? Just wondered how much it would improve 60ft. times, if at all. :fragez:

From what I have seen, people are running the same times through the 1000' mark with anything from a 2.73:1 through a 3.73:1 and the only reason anybody changes ratios is so they don't have to shift to 4th crossing the line. These engines make a ton of torque and don't need perfect gearing to keep them in a tight rpm band so therefore the gearing really doesn't matter that much. For the money spent changing gears you could spend it elsewhere (like a converter) and get buch better bang for the buck.

I've been running 3.08 gears with good results the last two years but am switching to 3.42's for next year along with a 28" tire.I think the only reason for switching to anything other than the 3.27-3.42 ratio's is if you want to increase traction by running a 29.5" tire.In which case running 3.73's with 29.5 would be like having close to a 3.27 with 26" effective ratio and 3.90's would be like having close to a 3.42 ratio.
But,like 1badTTA said there are better places to spend money.

Thank You, that's what I wondered. I picked up the TTA this fall and haven't taken it to the track yet but with the "butt dyno" it just doesn't seem to leave like my Buick. Thanks again.

Could be alot of different things, converter, chip, turbo, rear suspension. The "Butt Dyno" and ET-Jeans are known to be inaccurate. Also depends on how much boost you leave with and how much traction you can get. With a stock suspension and regular radials you should be able to get 1.9 60's with a little luck, dont think any rear gear will change that as it is traction limited.
If you really want, feel free to support your favorite vendor by installing a bunch of parts on your car before it ever sees a track. Or you could simply run it and see exactly what needs to be done. Not telling you what to do with your car, but you really don't need to do anything major untill you are running at least mid-low 12's unless something breaks. Set it up to run with what it has and you won't be dissapointed.
Looking at your sig, it appears you already know about the LC2's and turbo cars in general, just not the TTA's specifics.

The gearing you would need for our cars is actually 3.45 (Borg Warner 9 bolt).
These gears were available in the 305 TPI 5-spd cars (87/89).
Scott Muller installed them on his "stock" TTA back in 89 and found 3/10 quicker in his 0-60 times. I am not sure what his launch technique was (Under boost or not).

I have the 3.42 gears in mine(12 bolt) run a 27 inch tire. 1.55 sixty with a 2 lb. launch with 9.5 convertor 3,000 stall.

Well I guess you will not be breaking your rear end anytime soon. :anbet:

If so, I met you at Cecil awhile back. I think the Shelby Dodge guys were running that day. I know that car had a 12 bolt and was from PA. If not, sorry.

Hi Rob, yes it is Wes, good memory. Just went 11.80 with the 93 chip and 20 lbs. of boost, booted me from the track.

Have you guys ever heard of a TR gearing down? Say to a TTA like 3:27 or so. I'm always jealous of the MPH they can pull over a Buick. I guess it has to do with aerodynamics too though. It would seem that a buick put out enough torque to overcome the gears on the bottom end.
.. Just crazy thinking on my part. I don't like big tires (tall) on street cars.
