I've had my trusty PIII 933 for a few yrs and never needed anything more, had a little electric surge the other night and now I'm in need of a new puter.
I want to build a new one and have not kept on on the latest and greatest stuff out there. I know I want to stay w/a P4 and always had good luck with the Intel Chipsets. So, what's out there I should be looking at? 800FSB is a must. Onboard LAN is about the only thing I would consider. I'll most likely go with seperate audio, video. I've got an ATI Radeon and SB Audigy 5.1 that I hope will still work.
Going to have IDE HDs no RAID, going to go new from case up. Suggestions?

for hard drives, can't go wrong with western digital 120gb caviar drives (8mb cache). the radeon and audigy should still be fine. for motherboards, I'd check some reviews on tomshardware.com to see which suits your needs. good luck.

Yep, I've used them before and plan to buy the stuff through them again. Was reading Toms last night, but was getting late and was tired, will do some more research today. Could just go Dell too...hard to beat a 2.4ghz w/a 17" Flatplanel display for 6 bills!!

OK, I will yell at you :screams: :screams: :screams:
I prefer AMD as the P4's are still overhyped and overpriced.
In all reality they are both good and either one can get the job done just fine. Just a little easier to get results from overclocking with the AMD's than it is from the Intel's IMHO but I am running an antique nowadays so who knows.

The reality of it is that most computers are only limited by the connection speed and the software installed. I don't care how fast your computer is, if you let it get clogged up with a ton of adware and stupid kiddy programs it will be comparable to a 486. The only thing you really need all the speed for is playing games and the vid card plays a bigger role than the processor.
Proof would be my old BP6 with dual celeron 366's @550, 256MB ram and an old 16mb vid card. It would cruise the internet and do anything other than playing games just as good if not better than any newer computer I have seen on a comparable internet connection (cable). Unfortunately it finally died after running 24/7 for 4 years. Guess it is time to overbuild something else to last as long as that one did, I know I won't be spending too much on it as it will end up being "outdated" by the time it is running anyways. Besides, I rarely play games anymore.

Go to cyberpowerpc.com, you can build a very cheap computer on that, that's of good quality.
