View Full Version : So who's going to be the first to make a good scantool for PalmOS or PocketPC?

I'm looking at buying a PDA and think with the new, faster processors and large memory capacities, that a new PDA would be great for a scatool. I know several cars have them already, I was wondering if anyone was willing to step up to the plate in the TR community and develop something like this.

On the radar ... actual had "limping prototypes" a while ago, but we have to finish the EFI system we're working on before we refocus back on the scan tool market.

Ken:
Are you going to incorporate OBDII into any of the future versions of tlink? Ie: So I can use my laptop at work to log more than 20 secs of data to try to capture glitches in semi-real time?
Have you played with deciphering any other datastreams than GM? ie: Ford/Chrysler/Euro/Jap? I'd be very interested if you were working on this, as a tool for use in my shop. I cojld then put the word out and I KNOW I could get you the business :)

The only problem I can see is how to get the data on to the handheld, most handhelds these days are going to SD cards and either proprietary or USB sync ports. Getting Turbolink to run on PocketPC should be a walk in the park, PalmOS shouldn't be too hard either, but getting the data to the PPC itself would be the hardest part. Unless you make an ALDL to WiFi connector. That would be neat!

Dan McCann has Tlink running on an older HP handheld device. It uses a PCMCIA serial adapter for the cable and has a small popup screen.
Although it's got a cool wow factor type thing to it and is great for portability and conveinant, I'm not sure how effective it would be since the display is so small in a real racing environment if you're trying to monitor things while running down the track.
Now, if we had some type of HUD, that would kick ass! :)

I see where you're going, but I mostly use the Scanbastard and my boost gauge while I'm rolling down the track, and use my laptop and T-Link as a datalogger to replay the run afterwards, I don't really use it as a "gauge" per se. I'd just rather get rid of the laptop, cables, power inverter, and all the extra stuff I normally bring to the track, and just stick a new Axim in the glove box to record and playback my runs.

Bump for this wonderful topic! Has anyone made any breakthroughs yet with respect to getting a scantool on a PDA?

Most of the palm devices are really only a serial cable over USB.
I've wondered what it would take use a Palm to drive an LCD device that would replace the instrument cluster in the dash. Seems to me you could do it for about the cost of a full out GNX dash. Since the gages are displayed with software it could be setup as user configurable.

We have a project we're doing in conjunction with Mercury Marine that I hope to see some "spill over" from.
The display device is actually a neat little color 320x240 Windows CE device and is very bright and easy to read (and rugged). I'm hoping that we can use the core product development platform to spin off an OBDI and OBDII device that uses this device (and being written for CE, some of the handhelds could be a side benefit!).

I too would be very interested in this if it ever materializes.
