Hey I care bud
Sorry to hear about your head gasket. Did you get the engine out yet and inspect the damage?

I just took my valve covers off tonight to check my head bolts and see if they loosened up over the summer or not. I have been really happy with the double stacked steels I put on last year.

i have everything torn apart...all that's left in the engine compartment is the bare block...yeah i blew a headgasket on #4 cylinder, not to mention 3 of my cylinders have holes starting to form (pin head sized)...so i am going to take the motor out and have machine work done to it...new TRW pistons, bored 30 over, 212/212 CC roller cam, polished crank, ported and polished stock heads, new and bigger valves...blah blah blah! gonna cost me some $$$ that's for sure

HairDrier

Does it look like this one?
http://bobdittmar.tripod.com/blown87combobs1987buickgrandnational/id2.html

Have you thought about who is going to do the work for you? You might be better off in the long run just sending the block to someone like Jack Cotton and having him do the whole thing. Like you I try to do things myself, but by the time you get the heads done, the block done, all the gaskets, pistons, cam, blah blah you will find it may not be that much more to have them do the whole thing. That guy Bill knows in Detroit (Bruce from Aggressive) does good work too I hear.

Also that way you know it is done right, and if something goes wrong you are covered. These are not the easiest engines to rebuild as we all know

d0n_3d
12-22-2003, 06:13 PM
wow yeah i blew my headgasket the EXACT same way you did only yours is alot worse!!! i have heard of lots of people blowing their headgaskets in the same exact number 4 cylinder! i wonder why that is...is that part of the gasket the weakest or something? I probably will have my motor worked on by either aggressive or somewhere close where i can just drop off the motor personally...don't want to ship it...i didn't plan on doing the motor work myself...just gonna buy the parts or tell the builder exactly what i want...anybody wanna lend me a fund of $10,000? i would appreciate the help! come on it's for a good cause :arco:

Have someone do the work that is familiar with these engines like Bruce at Aggressive. It will pay off in the long run.

You should see the video I have of when my HG blew. The whole track was covered with smoke, and you can hear all the people going "awwwww" :bowl2:

i just emailed bruce from aggressive...trying to get an idea of how much this rebuild is gonna cost...

yeah blowing a headgasket is not cool...when i blew mine, i was in chicago on the freeway trying to race a z06 corvette and the second i boosted up to 27 psi, the car fell right on it's face like it didn't want to accelerate and then i noticed TONS of white smoke coming from behind my car...i was ahead of the z06 when it happened and he drove by slowly while i putted to the side of the road to check to see what happened...had to drive the car 70 miles back home with white smoking pouring out the back the whole time...for some reason the car never overheated and stayed right at 160 the whole time...and the motor wasn't "burning" the water out the tailpipes...the smoke was coming from the water and oil burning on the headers while driving! it drove home ok but you could tell something was wrong...got it home then i drained the oil and it looked PERFECT! checked the water in the radiator and overflow tank, looked perfectly normal! wtf!? :unknw:

HairDrier

If your HG looked just like mine, then it makes sense. The gasket blew on the lifter valley side, so all it did was pressurize the engine instead of the cylinder. 27psi inside the engine block blows oil out of the easiest exit, the breathers. The oil blows all over the exhaust and turbo and creates all the smoke. You didnt lose any coolant because you didnt expose a water jacket, they were still sealed.

Your oil will be full of graphite from the factory gasket. I didnt have that problem because my engine had FelPro's, but I did still change the oil twice to be sure. Since you are rebuilding it does not matter.

If you could shoot me a private email on what Bruce says I would appreciate it. I have the original block from my car and turbo crank waiting for a rebuild, and I would like to have an idea of what it will run.

Thank you for asking. It's actually coming home from the paint shop sometime this week. Then we will have to put it back together and put the engine/drivetrain back in the thing and she will be done (2 1/2 years later)

I sure hope it will all be worth it!! :add_shit:

Well, she was driven enough. Has about 100,000 miles on it and we are second owners. She was in pretty rough shape when we got her, but cleaned up nicely!! When we stated to take her apart and were in the process of taking the interior out, we pulled the back seat out and found all kinds of goodies under there, including a handful of wheat thins!! This, of course didn't surprise me having cleaned out the interior of my own Turbo Regal a couple of years prior. Anyway, she is #405.

Yeah thats it next to Bill, the week before my wreck :add_shit:

Now I have a shiny hood, a front end thats not full of chips and a new hoodliner. I am also putting in a chrome up pipe and moving my alcohol injection around. I think I may paint my valve covers like Bill's, since it looks nice and is pretty simple.

I dont know how big a hurry Todd is in to sell them, but I am pretty interested. I am laid off for now though so I have to wait till I go back to work before I do anything. If you remember my drag radials are bald as a baby's behind :as:

Bob, this is what Bruce told me about that engine rebuild.

"Donald,
I've put together a list of parts & prices for a engine rebuild.
TRW pistons $348.00 ,pistons rings $89.00, 206/206 roller cam kit $875.00(included
in kit is: timing chain, billet camshaft, roller lifters, valve springs,
push rods,& cam button hardware) , center billet main caps $148.00, main,
rod,& cam bearings $79.00, brass freeze plugs $11.50, rear main seal $13.49,
ARP main studs $52.00,Champion ported heads $1195.00,Champion ported intake
$230.00, ARP head bolts $49.00, high volume front cover $149.00, water pump
$15.00, gaskets $149.00. Total for all $3402.99.These are the parts I suggest
to help you reach your goal. If you are looking to have us rebuild the motor
for you, machine shop & assembly average $1500.00.
If you have any more questions please let me know.
Thanks,
Bruce Alred"

SO yeah it looks like I may be just rebuilding some parts of my motor rather than doing the whole thing. There's no way I can afford 5 G's for just the motor alone! I was looking to spend maybe that much including EVERYTHING (turbo, injectors, etc.)!

HairDrier
01-03-2004, 04:31 PM
$1500 for the rebuild is pretty decent price I think
Get the roller cam for 875
Get your heads ported, no need for champions. $500
pistons, bearings gaskets, etc 900 or so
billett centers 150
port your own intake, thats easy just dont go crazy

You are now at about 4g's

Sell your turbo and injectors for 5-600 at least, back down to 3400

Get a big neck IC, thats 150, youre at 3550

get a bad ass turbo for 1000, youre at 4550

Get big injectors and chip and ECM modified, plus extra for who knows what, you are at 5500.

Not too bad for your goals.

think about it you have some time.

Or put a cam in your block and some billett centers, see how long it holds together for about half of that

Kenny's car is powered by a "corporate" motor. But his "old" car IS BUICK powered and lives in Lorain,Ohio! It ran 7.54 last time out and the owner[ Ron Luman] is looking for a couple more tenths with the motor that Kenny just "freshend up " By the way the car is for sale if you guys know anybody looking! The cars fastest pass was a 7.12 when Kenny D. owned it and it had a Jerico 5 speed. The car will be at Buicks at Norwalk stop by and check it out! I'll buy you a Pepsi.
