My old CD player finally went, and now I'm looking for one that includes a hard drive, so I can hold all my music without having to change CD's. I only know of the following head units with hard drives. Can someone please post a list of others I don't know about, or if they have any info on the ones I listed? Thanks!

Sony MEX1HD (http://www.circuitcity.com/detail.jsp?c=1&b=g&catoid=-8864&qp=0&oid=53289): Cool looking unit with a 10 meg hard drive (should hold approx. 2,000 songs). Rips CD's very fast. The bad part is the hard drive doesn't hold .mp3's. May be possible to download .mp3's, convert them to .wav's and put them on a CD, and then transfer over. Even so, that's a pain.

Pioneer DEH-P90HDD (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/product/detail/0,,2076_4039_37868,00.html): Another head unit with a 10 meg hard drive, with some really nice features. Still, this one also doesn't hold .mp3's. Even worse still, it apparently only rips professional CD's to prevent piracy. That would suck for me, since I have very few actual "real" CD's.

Alpine HDA-5460 (http://iweb.alpine-usa.com/pls/admn/item_info?p_item_name=HDA-5460&p_category=10&p_subcategory=45&p_main=10): Wow, this baby has a 16 meg hard drive (approx. 3,000 songs) and holds .mp3's! Too good to be true? You bet. You mean there's a catch? Of course, there always is when I'm looking for something. :( This head unit doesn't have an AM/FM radio, making it useless to me. Grr!

Kenwood Music Keg (http://www.kenwoodusa.com/excelon/excelonKeg.jsp): This one isn't a head unit, but something that goes in your trunk (or under your seat) and has a 20 gig hard drive (approx. 5,000 songs) and can use .mp3, .wma, .wav, or flac formats. If I get this, I'll also need a head unit. Although it can connect to almost any good head unit, I'll need a higher end Kenwood radio if I don't want to use the extra interface, and I don't. I want all the controls from the radio.

Get an ipod and an alpine head unit w/ the adapter for it...You can put any type of file you want to on an ipod and the best model holds 60 gigs and photos and it can be carried around.

That is just my honest opinion.

This would be my recommendation as well. My friend at school has this setup and it seems to work flawlessly. And if you go to the gym, work, school or anyother place you can take the iPod with you and continue listening to the song that was playin in the car.

Wow, it any took a year and a week for someone to reply! :)

Seriously, can't believe that a year later these things are still a tiny minority of CD players. ipod's are nice, but I'm not thrilled with something that has to be plugged in.

Check Ebay and see if you can find an Empeg. It's a hard drive based unit that pulls out and connects to your PC via ethernet. It's not a super flashy player and you wont be able to hook up satellite radio to it or anything but for hard drive based MP3 playing, it is the best.

Another good alternative is the Dension DH-102. Here is a link:

The Dension unit is okay. The hard drive slides out and you connect it via USB. The interface is okay and sound is good. I dont think it's quite as slick as the Empeg but it's better than anything else I've seen. I had one for a while and I liked it. I also had an Empeg.

Right now I am using an Alpine headunit with an iPod. It's the crudest solution I've had in years. It's slow, it doesn't display correctly.. the only thing that I can say about it positive is that it does actually work.

There's also iriver units. An H340 can be had for less than an iPod and it has more features.

Rockford Fosgate also has a new unit, under it's OmniFi division. I got a complete setup from woot a little while back, for $204...not bad. The Omnifi does require a head unit, but it can be setup completely wireless that you don't have to shuffle things in and out of the car to update it's songs. http://forum.woot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=306

Just another option...
