What is an acceptable amount of shaft side play? Obviously there has to be some or else it wouldn't be able to spin freely, but how much is too much. I am asking about side to side movement of the wheel and not end play.

Thanks

Side to side you'll get what you would think is too much. If its not hitting the houseing and not blowin oil, your prolly alright. I've never put an indictor on one, but ill bet at the end of the shaft it's almost .030. It suks to think about it,but they go kerchunk kerchunk when wobbeling a good one. :albert:

Its like an engine bearing, there has to be play there to allow the oil to become a liquid bearing. I would say you want several thousandths clearance from the housing at least

Side play, 5 thousandths is acceptable by side, I mean end to end. If you're looking at the turbo straight on, side to side.

Up and down, I dont think there is a hard and fast rule as the shaft centers itself when spinning. Long as it isnt touching, its probably okay.

The reason I ask is because it is noticable and when measured with feeler gauges I was able to slide the corner if a .009" in with the shaft pressed down and an .018" in with the shaft lifted. This is on the exhaust side measured between the tip of the blade and the housing. I know it isn't nearly as accurate as using a dial indicator but it is all I have available and seems to work.

Anything to worry about on a newer turbo (less than 6 months on a rebuild)

Thats not end to end, thats up and down.

Ride out.

So it is acceptable as long as it isn't hitting the housing?? I just thought a fresh rebuild should be tighter than that.

And no, there isn't any noticable end play, about .002" would be my guess.

Sounds like you're "good to go".
