How is a 61mm wheel going to get you into the 10's?

The 61 will not get you mid 10s, but they are right, you should upgrade what you have.

If you are dead set on trying to get mid 10s with stock , unported heads, you are going to need a large turbo.

Pick a turbo manufacturor and stick with them.

It's my personal opinion that a lot of vendors err to the small side on turbo selection. I have my own theory on why this is done but, that being said, for where you want to be, I'd look at at least a GT67 and possibly even larger if it's in your budget.

A 67 will get you to high tens easily with room left for improvement. You can squeak into the tens with a 63mm wheel, dive well into the tens with a 65-66mm wheel, and run high 9's with a 70mm wheel. Hope this helps

I talked to John Craig at Limit Engineering about turbo selection for about half an hour the other day. His thoughts are that the guys that know how to tune can run the larger (even non-bb) turbos and get them to run like the smaller bb-turbos. The guys who can not tune for poop need the smaller bb-turbos.

I totally agree with that.

I think that JayC gets away with running a larger turbo on his cars and his friends/customers cars cause he is a wizz with the tuning.

What do ya think Jay?

My personal experience is that I suck with tuning. Even with a 61, the car would not 60ft for shit. I did have the stock converter, but I am sure it could have done better than a 2.2.

Like Taffy said the bigger the turbo the less the margin for error. With a big turbo, unless you have the perfect converter, fuel map, no exhaust leaks, etc, the car will lay down faster than with a small one. With a stocker you will notice if something is off, with a 67 the effect would be tenfold. Thats why I always try to get people to max out their current combo before going for the latest and greatest.

How is a 61mm wheel going to get you into the 10's?

Now that I think about it. The gt wheels might flow enough air to get a car into the 10s. Albeit the HIGH 10s, and you would have to wring the poop out of the turbo. I got a 61mm wheel (non gt) in a 60-1 housing (4" in and 2.5" out) with a precision p trim .63 exhaust. Guys have taken this turbo to the low 11s. 11.20s is the best I have heard.

Can not wait to give that turbo another try :rock_dj:
