My trans is just about to bite the big one. While the trans is out I need to decide on a stall speed for my converter based upon what turbo I'll be upgrading to.

The mission for this car is simple, and that is to be a strong contender at the street races (please no lectures on street racing, I've heard it all by now). It's a 95% street driven car that sees only 114 octane. I want a turbo and converter combination that spools great on the street but when taken to the track can get me in the 10.8 - 11.0 ET range which is as fast as I would dare trying to go with a stock motor. My combo is listed below. What say you all???

Current combo:

Stock bottom end
TA49
50# injectors
Walbro 340
ported irons with 1.77 valves
Comp 206/206 cam
Cotton's stock location IC
THDP
9/11 converter 3000 stall
Max Effort chip, set on 26*

Either a GT67 with the stall speed you have now or if you want to bump up to about 3500, a GTQ71.

Thanks Jay. :) I must say I'm surprised though. I never would have thought a 3k stall would be enough for the GT67. :)

Goddammit. An LT-45a with a 3500 stall will cure all that ails ya!!!!

If not, I will give you $5 back for your troubles!!!!

The GTQ71 with a 3500 stall with make a 45a it's bitch.

Ben, we've actually run a GTQ71 with a ~3100 stall and even that's do-able. It's a little soft but it does work. One of the local guys I help out went 10.70 @ 127 with that setup at only 22 PSI (Didnt have enough injector to go any higher.) This is on a full weight car with AC, etc.

That GTQ71 is amazing.. its expensive, but amazing.

:top: I am presuming that Jay was likely assuming that I would also install appropriate sized injectors to match whatever turbo I decided on. I agree, 50# injectors would never let a GT67 live up to its full potential. :)

Hell, I don't know what to decide. I'm starting to waffle again and leaning towards just keeping my TA49 for now. Considering my motor still has the stock bottom end I may be better off to just leave well enough alone and be content with what I have for the time being. I know with a bit more tuning the parts are there to run some 11.50s easy. I just don't want to push the stock motor too far and then regret it.

A GTQ71 is a 9 sec turbo, doubt you will want that.

I say TE63e, it can get to the tens on a good tune, and still have better street manners than the bigger turbos.

3200 stlll converter similar to jmidolo's will make it run very well.

Before I did the TE63E, Id do the GT67. I dont think youre talking about a lot of difference money wise and I think the GT67 spools better.

Well if it spools better than the 67 is the way to go. It will be good to mid 10's too, in other words powerful enough to break pleanty of stuff if you are so inclined :gost:

Man I love helping people spend their money :arco:

True true. I was leaning towards the 45a/67q but I am liking the 71q more and more.

I will probably get the 45a and add a touch of the juicie juice!!

Jay: Would this turbo be good fit for a 257 ci Stage II street car with Stage II heads and 3800 stall convertor? How expensive?

Haven't talked to you in a couple of years but do want to thank you for putting together this forum. Very informative.

Thanks.

With 50# injectors and a 3000 stall, you can go to a TE60 which would be a solid bump over the TA49, good for 11.0's. That'll work fine for your combo. You could also go with 60# injectors, restall your converter to a 3,200, and get a 62-1 for 10.8's. Much beyond that, you'll need more injector, more stall, and possibly a beefier fuel system depending on how hard you really want to push it, I wouldn't want to push a Walbro much past high 10's.

GT67 in the PTE .63 with the housing coated for better spool and under hood heat reduction from here www.coatingspecialties.com.

Buy a 4" maf pipe, get the Z06 maf, run it blow through and gain an even better spool.

Restall to 3300 and when its time to go to the track pony up for the high Z 65lbs and have a blast.
