If the average guy with the average mods (see sig, I guess) were ready to upgrade to a bigger/better turbo, which would it be? This is, of course, assuming that you didn't want to have to upgrade a million other thing to accomodate the new turbo.
If you dont have a converter, Id stick to a 49 or a 51.. you could try a ball bearing unit but its more $$ and still no gaurentee its going to spool to your liking with a stock converter.

How do the prices vary from, say, $400 for the stock replacement?
The 49, 51 stuff will run you ~700ish (Im pulling prices off the top of my head here so dont expect them to be firm) and the BB stuff is up around $2000.00 retail.
Depending on your long range goals, you may be better off going in a different direction anyway.

Well, you might be better off with a higher stall converter and a more conventional turbo. I mean really, it all depends on what youre trying to accomplish. A 49/51 is a nice step up from stock and doesnt need a lot of converter. With the ball bearing stuff, you can run more turbo and get a decent spoolup but it still has its limits.

It really makes me wish that there were ANY shop within an hours drive of me that knew anything about these cars. When I owned my first GN, it was so long ago that I didn't need to do anything to it to be the owner on Main St. Now, after all these years, I'm able to buy a new one...and it's so much more complicated! Thanks for your advice.

I had a 49 w/blues, stock tc and it's fine..just like a stocker. I had a 51 w/a stock tc also..and it was a little slow to spool, but not that bad, it really like the 3000 stall tc a lot. Spooled instantly.
You can pick up a low mile used 49 if that's your goal to save a few bucks and stay in the stocker low money range. If you're gonna upgrade..do it once and get it over with :) But you will need a TC.

Or get a 44. Just about the same thing, you'll need to mod the wastegate holder thingy.

Yea, 44 is gonna give you more top end and pull harder, slightly slower spool but will still spool nice with the right chip and tuned properly.

The TA-49 is an awesome entry level turbo.Spools good with the stock converter and will quickly take a stock engine GN into NHRA roll bar territory with the correct supporting mods
The 44 and the 49 are the same turbo, just one is stock appearing and one isnt. The 44 is about 8 horsepower better than a 49 due to better housings.

Call your local favorite turbo guy and ask him what he thinks is good. I would suggest John Craig. If you ask on the board, you will get 5 trillion answers and be just as dumb as when you posted. Get on the phone and adk the question.
I suggest the GT-61 that Limit Engineering sells!!!
