You'll need a front cover gasket set (Fel-Pro #TCS45930) and valve cover gasket set (Fel-Pro #50156). If you are installing a new, stock cam gear and chain, you may also want to replace the tensioner (spring #1358909; bolt #1356635; and the tensioner itself #25532546) and the cam button (upgrade to the 3800 roller needle bearing button #25532588). Be sure not to forget to put that button in before you put the cover back on or you'll end up getting really good at changing that cover (like I am)!
If it hasn't been done already, now's a good time to change the spring-type clamps on the various radiator and heater hoses to screw clamps so have a few of those clamps standing by.
If you send me your email, I can send you a R&R checklist for doing the job. I won't guarantee that it's 100% perfect for every modified engine out there but it should at least have the basics correct.
Good luck,

You have been told correctly. The stock tensioner should not be used except with the stock chain. As I understand it, it would be chewed up, putting debris into your oil pan and oil pump suction strainer, and the remaining metal part of the tensioner would probably not be very nice to the chain.
Good luck,
