View Full Version : How to get power from battery to my amp?

I am putting an amp in the trunk and want to run the POS wire directly from the battery. I bought an in-line fuse holder to go between the battery and the POS wire that will run to the trunk.

What is the best way to connect the wire from the fuse holder to the POS battery post?

1) smash the strands under the post when I tighten it down?
2) put an aligator clip on the end and clip it to the post?

Does anyone make an adapter that hooks to the battery and then the wire to the adapter?

Go to circut city or bestbuys and talk to an installer . They sell kits and battery connectors ,But i feel that you should realy do some reading first or will have a severe electical nightmare on your hands
Good Luck

EXCELLENT site Benz1!!! I've refered to that site several times.

They make a battery treminal clamp that has a screw and bolt that you can connect the wire too. Do not smash or clip! If your going to connect an amp you gotta do it right or bad things can happen. Go to a stereo shop and get a battery terminal. explaine to them what you need to do and they will hook you up. When you apply your inline fuse make it 12 inches(or shorter) from the battery. Check the specs of the amp and make sure you use the right size fuse. If it's too big you'll catch your car on fire. This is very important IMHO. When you go through the firewall with the power wire you MUST use a grommit. Or again...fire. When you mess with a power wire for an amp you gotta be careful. Good luck! It's easy!

Thanks for the 'sound' advice. Get it? Sound? :-)

I will visit the local sound shop and see what they have for me. My fuse will be 4 inches from the battery post.

IF my amp uses a 30amp fuse what should I put in the fuse holder at the battery? The same of lower amperage?

When you go to the sound shop let them know what amps you have and ask them about the fuse by the battery. They could tell you exactly. I havent used kicker stuff. I dont know the details.

If you can return your 0 gauge do it. If your amps are requiring 30 amp fuses your wasting your money. One of my anps uses a 150W fuse and the other is like 90W. I used 4 gauge wire with my bd1500 and 1050S. Both amps ran my power HX2's. Talk about boom.

Bill I ran my amp wire along the firewall, through the speedo hole and under the door kick plate to the back seat. Then I pulled the back seat out a little and ran the wire to the trunk. I ran 8 gauge but I have a small amp (100 watt). You can run a 25amp fuse up by the battery if you want to play it safe, I think I used a 30. If you want to hide the fuse you could always put it in the cavity under the battery, but then you have to pull the battery to check it.

oops, I got two different posters mixed up.

Also, dont forget the hole behind the passenger side valve cover. I didnt use it...maybe too close to the heat? Dont know.

Bob - yeah, I will use the spedo area and door kick plate. 10 gauge is the wire I have miles of so I hope it does the trick.

BE4U - I assumed as much and blamed a mild addiction to Crack :-)

Yeah, very mild and only on weekends:) But I dont think you'd want to use 10 gauge. I dont know the size of the amp but 10 gauge is small for an amp. I've never used or heard of anyone using that small of wire. If your going to go through the trouble of running the wire to the trunk you might wanna go larger so you wont have to redo the install. Call your local sound shop and get a second opinion. I may be wrong.

We used to run 10 and 12 gauge in high school and a buddy almost burned down his Skyhawk :thrashi:

Bill how big is your amp? Mine is only 150 watt. I would say you should get some 6 if you can find it, or 4. Four is getting pretty big, hell I had a set of jumper cables in high school that were 4 gauge :add_schac

Not sure of the exact wattage. Bought it a long time ago and pitched the manual.

It says 125 a side or 250 bridged but I seriously doubt that is RMS.

I suspect 75 watts RMS max. It has power and ground wires attached to it and they are only 10 gauge. I have used the same amp (another) in my Daytona since 89 with no worries and ran 12 gauge from the battery.

I would think with a 30 watt fuse at the battery it will pop before the wire overheats. I think 10 gauge is 32 or 35 watts rated.

And if the GN blows up......I can get a mustang.
