i'am getting my engine rebuilt and was wondering is there any steps to take to not flatten a lobe on the cam upon starting it up for the first time? it is a 218 218 comp flat tappet cam. :anbet:

Cam lube the crap out of it and pre lube the engine prior to starting. Vary the rpm for the first thirty minutes between 2000-2500 no load rpms. Dont let it idle at all

Go roller !!!!
If thats not an option, you might wanna break in the new cam w/ old springs and then switch to the new ones. Comp 980's are about the heavyiest ones you'll wanna use. I belive those are at 95# seat pressure.
Also, make sure the lifters run smooth in there bores, and prior to installing the lifters, eyeball the #3 exhaust lobe, those are in the wrong spot right from the get go.

I've built a bunch of these engines and I've never lost a cam yet :marchmell

We always:

Run soft springs around 65-70 lbs. seated

Keep the engine speed above 1800 rpm while varying the engine speed all the way up to 4000 rpm for at least 20 minutes

Use cam break-in lube on the cam lobes and lifter bottoms

Prime the oiling system

Add one bottle of GM EOS with the oil

Change the oil and filter after the 20 minute break-in,add one more bottle of GM EOS to the new oil then drive the car for a couple of hours varying the trottle but trying not to allow the engine to idle much at all.

Change the oil again

Drive it for a few days if you have the time before airing up the cylinders and changing the springs

Your done :arco:

Is there any one recommended cam package? I know Comp sells complete cam kits, I was eyeballing the 206/206 packsge, I believe it comes with springs and a roller timing set and whatnot. Does anyone else sell complete kits like this?
