Hey folks, yes you guessed it probably a dumb question from a Newbe but here it goes.
I am looking at a stock 87 GN with low miles (37,000 to be exact) and the car drives awesome. But I can only get 10-11 lbs. of boost on the factory gauge. I do remember a couple of rides I got years ago from buddies with GN's that were stock that it 14-15 easly and spun the tires hard once the boost came on then the traditional bark on the 1-2 shift.
I don't see any wiring going to the waste gate or am I blind? Is it controlled internally by a spring or an adjustment.
The guy that owns it doesn't know much about how they work and never drove it hard enough to realize what he is missing. It is pretty tough trying to deal on a car that poss. has some larger $ issues.
Second question is oil in the intake pipe, where I come from that means the turbo is pushing it, correct? I really want the car but I can't start tearing it appart when I don't own it. Need help and opinions quick...

factory boost gauges are not very accurate...I'd get an aftermarket gauge for sure. Also, oil in the up-pipe and IC AND low boost could mean the turbo is toast...with that low of mileage though, I dunno...could have been pushed really hard.
A lot of oil dumped in the intergal gate will screw it up as well.

It's been over 20 yrs since I ran the stock turbo set up, but I'll see if I can help. I believe the pass, side valve cover vents into the stock ( TA style ) bolt on turbo inlet bell. If this is still the case, the intercooler is most likely filled to some capacity with motor oil. This oil will push its way into the uppipe and intake. This can be cured by installing a pass. side valve cover breather and removing and flushing the intercooler with gasoline. As for the boost---the factory gauge is inaccurate, or the boost solenoid and/or hoses are in need of some replacement. HTH, Brian
