Some of you may have seen these photos before, but I still have no definative answer.
With all this talk about Turbonetics Turbos on the other thread. I didn't want to highjack the original question. As dicussed in the other thread, they do not use a common description of thier turbos like some of the others. Having said that, I have been very happy with this turbo and it spools like mad. My dilemma is this: What is this one in comparison to the others, and what would be a major upgrade. I had posted these pics before, on another board, and some very knowledgable opinions were put forth. I know there is no picture of the exhaust side, so it is hard to tell exactly what it is. I have a new Mease DP coming soon, so maybe I will take some photos when the DP is off. With the photos shown, does anyone have a good guess? Excuse the DP and orange hoses. Old pics.
There is talk that with a new BB turbo, you can get away with a lower stall converter. Is this true? If so, maybe a BB turbo is in my future?

Giving you a name for that turbo really is not going to do anything for you. If you know the mm inducer on the compressor and the exhaust wheel, also the trim for both wheels, then you can compare it to a main stream turbo. Other wise, telling you that it looks like a TE44 is not going to do you much if it is indeed a Turbonetics turbo.

Wldwst,
It's kind of hard to tell from the pictures, but is that a 2.75" inlet?
If so, it's quite possibly a Stage IV Cheetah.
You are correct about our BB turbos. You can usually go with a larger compressor side than non-BB unit and still maintain the same spool up.
PS: You could also look on the back of the compressor housing or backplate for a 5 digit part number, this will assist in identifying it.
Hope that helps!

David. When I get the old DP off, I will look for a number and will measure both sides. Then maybe we can figure this one out. Thanks guys.

My Innovative double ball bearing GT70 P trim spools like the stocker on a 3200 protorque converter lockup.
Gotta water cool the doubles however.
Works fine on the daily driver. :marchmell

Looks like a T-44, or a 49. Measure the compressor and exhaust. That will get us in the ball park.

Bob,
I was trying to figure out what turbonetics turbo was on there when Jeff owned the car. I think it is the first generation stage 3 but not 100% on that. The car still has the stock converter and spools like mad. The exhaust housing is smaller than the PTE .63 on my TE-44. I believe it was put on in the early 90s if that is any help.
Have you done much to the car since you bought it?

I have plenty of new stuff, and much more coming. It was nice to find an immaculate car to begin with. All the add ons I am doing could be reversed at some point. Along with finding adequate bolt ons, I am also buying any stock peices I did not receive with the car. I wish I knew more about the cars history though. There seems to be many not so obvious mods done. All of which are done in good taste I might add. One of the mysteries was the large ANS decal on the ECM.

New #60 High Impedence injectors and 2 of Eric's chips are coming soon
Mease SS 3" DP
Marks Cold Air Kit, 3" up pipe and Electric Exhaust Cutout
Scanmaster
Electronic Boost Controller with dual solenoids and Y cord
Driveshaft Hoop
Turbolink v4 with laptop stand coming from Joe Tiano
Hurst Roll Control
Power Plate
As you can see, I have been busy. There are more things coming all the time. I am also waiting for a set of stock turbo wheels from Bweavy. He is supplying a mint set and altering them.(15x6 and 15x8). This would add even more to the street sleeper look. I have also replaced the old air dams that were drilled out, gotten rid of the KB ram air, and replaced all the badges with the proper 87 markings.
You are right about the way it spools. I was just curious what it is. I may replace it this spring with a larger turbo if it doesn't perform well enough with the new injectors. Also, the Prostars will be off and for sale in the next couple of months. She should be fun with the coming mods.

I'm doing the exact same thing.

Ok . I had the old DP off and took a couple of less than ideal pics of the exhaust side. Maybe these will help ID this turbo? I hope this helps.
You also get a couple of pics of my new Mease SS 3" DP from Bweavy and my new 3" up pipe and Maf setup ( with air filter)from Mark Hueffman. Nice parts.

Did you get any #s off the turbo so we can tell you what it is?

O.K. It is months later, and I have finally removed the turbo from the car. I have posted a few of the pics showing all numbers I could find. I was going to send it to David (Turbonetics),for freshening, but everything looks great. He suggested I remove both housings and measure the diameters for a positive ID, but I am hesitant to open it up myself.
There is zero play and it works flawlessly. Turbo Gurus take your best guesses as to what it is. I will want to sell it soon, so give me an idea what it is worth. I ran an 11.63 with this gem. Very quick spool with a stock D5.
