View Full Version : Pioneer and MP3s question.
Hey y'all,
I have a Pioneer tape player head unit and six disk changer. My head unit says nothing about being able to play mp3s. I was thinking of buying a new head unit for the car I have here and just bringing it back with me to the states and using it in the Buick. Once again, I would get a Pioneer.. probably tape player again. My question is, if I want to play Mp3s in the disk changer, do I need a head unit that is MP3 compatible, or do I need a disk changer?
Thanks..

The disc changer must be able to read the MP3's, and the head unit must be able to display the titles. I am afraid you will have to get the whole kit n kaboodle.
I have a Pioneer MP3 player in my truck and it works well, cost me $179.
Why piss with tapes and changers when a single MP3 disc can hold 170 songs?

Yes, I somewhat agree with that logic. I still want to be able to play tapes occasionally, but the MP3 is by far, the best thing. I wanted to have the best of both worlds..
The way I have it set now, I have a six disk changer under the PS seat. I can just reach around and switch CDs in an out. All controlled from my head unit. Now, I want to be able to play MP3s. 6 disks full of MP3s. Might as well have my own radio station.
I guess I'll hold off. I was also thinking about satellite radio and that's not available here.
Thanks.

Long as you get a CD Changer that can play MP3s it does not matter what head unit you go with. You don't need to disply titles on the head unit in order to play them. All of your in dash mp3 players will disply the header info from the mp3 track though.
I'm actually putting a new head unit in the Limited in the next few wks and am going to go with one of the newer Alpine units. for about 250 you can get a pretty well loaded mp3 head unit that has 4v preouts, sub line out etc.....
My pioneer I have now can display the name of the disk, so I imagine it could display the name of the mp3.
If I come across a deal, I might go that route. Put the disk changer that's in the Buick now in the Trailblazer or something.
Thanks for the answers.

Yea, I imagine that if you stick w/a Pioneer deck/Pioneed changer you will get that functionality of the mp3 tag display...
Ditch the tape player, and sell the changer.
Buy yourself a Pioneer in-dash CD player that can play MP3s. Pioneer has a head unit that can play MP3s, as well as DVDs. You can find it for on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3078434370&category=32825
Or, you can just buy a nice cd/mp3/wma playing head unit for under $200.

Yeah but he wants his own radio station  :thrashi: :rock_dj:
That would hold like 1000 songs :thrashi:
I personally chose the $200 route like Ross. Think about it, with 150+ songs on a CD how much changing are you really going to be doing?

Its a little pricey but having 30GB of tunes at your disposal comes in handy. I had an Empeg before I got the Dension but I wanted something that looked more like a car radio and less like an electronics project. Granted the Empeg had more functionality but I dont think it sounded any better and the Dension's user interface is a little more navigatable. Not to mention you dont need an special software for transfering tunes.
