Why go Spragless? Very Simple Sprags break. The most common failure on a Th400 is sprag breakage. Some make drums to go from the Hd 34 element to a 40 element sprag assembly. This helps to improve the strength of the sprag assembly but adds rotating mass. The bottom line is if you shock a mechanical part it will break. Shock a clutch and it will slip grab and go on down the track. No mechanical sprag = no sprag to break. Why a billet aluminum VB? You can only do so much with a reworked factory VB. 3rd gear has more clutch area than a powerglide but the direct clutches tend to fail at a much lower HP. If you have this problem pull the pan and check out the VB chances are you have a old cast iron VB. With a billet aluminum VB you have a blank sheet of paper. Calibration can be perfect.
