View Full Version : Which coil springs?

What is a good, reasonably priced coil spring for front and rear? Moog's cost about $220 for a set of four. Is this the standard?

I am buying Bilstein shocks for all four corners. Do I have to replace my springs...I have the original ones with 43,000 miles and 17 years on them.

And how much of a pain is it installing these? Are we talking an all day project? (things seem to take me longer for some reason) :add_schac

I put the HOTCHIS lowering springs on mine $267, the ride is not that bad..with 17 Simmon wheels...and it took about 3 or 4 hr too install with KYB shocks

How do the Hotchis spring compare to the Eibach springs?

I am looking for that killer stance and good handling. Not worried about racing it. I will take the lower 60ft times at the track.

How big of a difference was it in the stance of your car. Dont have any before and after pics do ya?

How hard are they to install? Just time consumming?

Rear springs are Very simple to do. All you do is unbolt the shocks from the rear, drop the rear end. You can place a jack under on tire and jack it up slightly or have someone stand w/some pressure on a rim to push down, once you do that, you can slip the spring out. 20 min job.

Fronts...a bit more involved. Been so long since I've done fronts, I believe I just used a spring compressor and snunk it out that way, but you can do it buy droping the Aframe aslo and using that tom compress the spring back up.

I think I can handle the rear without a problem, the way you described it. The fronts sound like tons of fun to do, I should be able to handle it. Thanks for the info on that. Lowering springs are definatly getting done this summer. I have been looking at pics all night with TR's lowered a little. I just love the stance and how close the fender gets to the tire, not so much gap there.

Thanks, Nick

I dont have any pics of my car but it looks more aggressive comming down the highway  and far as the difference in the Hotchkis and Eibach i dont know.. mine was dropped about 1 1/2 all around...I can tell the difference around corners since its been lowered, compared to the Kirban shocks i removed

Does anyone know which ones lower your car more? Eibach?

Don't know how the Eibach s are or not, but I had put TRW Variable rate coil/cargo springs in my GN and I could not get that thing to 60 foot for shit. They rode nice, but just would not squat. The stock springs in my Limited squat very nice, even when you jack up just the front, the ass end sits nice..not so w/the TRWs..just a heads up.

i think the eibachs are slightly lower. my GN with eibachs sits lower than my monte ss with hotchkis front springs. although, being two different cars, its not really an apples to apples comparison. if i could do it over, i'd put the eibachs in the ss too. i was trying to be cheap about it and get hotchkis fronts and cheapo moog for the rear.

Man there is nothing in the world better than when that ass end sits down perfectly :lickit: :add_twink

The Eibach's should take it down about an inch. I had a set but never installed them because they start to become an issue with bigger/taller tires on the rear. FWIW, I put Moog variable rate springs in the rear and paid $60 for the pair. I thought that was a decent price. Installing Bilstein shocks in the rear at the same time definitely raised the car up.

So....if you want to go lower I'd check out the Eibach installs some TR people have done and would consider a good shock with them.

markb---Where did you buy Moog rear springs for $60 per pair? I priced the Moog CC627 rear springs and they are $49.86 each.

Just my local parts store, nothing special. Variable rate cargo-coils. I was really surprised because the local place is usually high compared to Pep Boys, Autozone, etc. . I'll have to check home to see if I have the receipt with the part number. I know with tax it wasn't over $70, so I had to pay around $60-65

Thanks. I will be interested to see what the part number is.

I still have my original fronts in the Moog box from when I did the replacement, but for some foggy reason I tossed my original rears.

Point is they came two springs in one box with one number. So when the parts place is giving you a price it could be for both springs and not just one.

I will check with parts place again. I did ask them if the price was for each and they said it was. Maybe they screwed up.

I put the Eibach's on my Monte SS, they did not lower it very much, less than an inch, but the ride is good and solid. I put Bilsteins on it at the same time.

Nice looking car Mark. I remember when mine used to look that nice!

OK - checked the invoice last night: Moog CC627 springs (pair) $65

iirc, the cc627 raised my car a good 1.5-2". needless to say, they came out a day later. just some fyi.

I think I paid about $44 for my Moog cargo coils, but they were having a sale with 20 or 30 percent off. They did come 2 to a box.

I just found this site, the have the moog cc627 for 49.86 and stock replacements are 39.69

turbobrian---What was the height of the rear (to the center of the wheel opening) with the cc627?

i wanna say it was 28.5" or 29". it was jacked up pretty good. it was several years ago that i did it so i cant say for sure. right now with the eibachs i believe its 25.25 and 26 but i can re-measure when i get home if you like.

That won't be necessary, but thanks for the offer.

markb--What were the part numbers for your Moog springs? What is the height to the wheel well apex with the Moogs and Bilsteins?

Moog CC627

I'll have to measure, but it depends on what tire I'm running. For the winter, I go back to the stock rims and 235/60 tires. Normally I run a widened rim and a 275/50 tire. Although that measures to the same tire height, I think the car sits different with the wider tires. Maybe it just looks meaner :-)

Here's a quick measurement in the parking lot at work :-)

Ground to wheel well moulding (center) - about 27"

Clearance from top of tire to center moulding - about 1.5"

Again, this is with a 235/60 tire on the car.

davzgn--What height do you get with the cc627 springs? What shock are you using?

Just the rear. I have not changed the front springs...

Unfortunately My GN is put away for the winter at my Brother's place which is 20+ miles away, so I can't tell you right now. If I get there in the near future I will post the height.

I couldn't tell you what's on it for shocks as I don't remember what noname shocks I used 10+ years ago. They will be replaced with Bilsteins before summer though.

I paid a local GN guy to do my front end. I wanted all stock, but he insisted on Moog springs. All I can say is "wow!". My front end sagged from the old springs, and now it's a good combo of Buick ride and decent handling (for a boat, that is).

Mark, How do those eibachs feel? I imagine launching is tougher with those. I was planning on getting those all around, but I'm starting to have some doubts. My car launches well now, but sags uneven. I want a good look (lower than stock), good launch, and a nice buick ride. Someone pinch me....

gbody5
02-26-2004, 04:47 PM
They are a little stiffer than stock which of course I don't mind, great cornering and overall great feel with the Bilsteins.

I don't drag race so I can't answer your question about launch, except that on my 180 HP MCSS it probably wouldn't make a damn bit of differece :dong:

We installed Hotchkis springs ($267 Summit Racing) in Kristi's Monte and the car came down a bit, but it still sits too high in the front for my taste. It's level, but it looks like a set of spindles will be necessary to get the stance and rake I want. The ride quality is excellent, however - firm but not stiff. I plan to use Eibach's in my GN in the hopes that the car will sit a bit lower than the Monte. We use Bilsteins in all our stuff and have found that they complement a good set of springs very well.
