View Full Version : Different Bell Housings?

Are there different bell housings for different engines? 230 vs 252, S2 vs S1 or early versus late?
The two 25500153 blocks I've got have the lower holes [the ones almost level with crank centerline] about .25/.28/.30 lower than the drawings in the Power Source manual. These drawings do state 3.8L (230) - but they also show other info for S1 and for S2 [manifold differences etc].
It's the block I'm interested in - I just used the bellhousing for reference.
What's up? Thx.

I have never seen a different bell hsg pattern on a Buick, they are all the same.

I'm with Bill, I think they're ALL the same. V6, V8, S1, S2, whatever.

Thx for your replies.
Are mis-machined blocks common? Seems strange to me that I've got two from totally different sources with the same difference.
Fortunately I think I can work around it - just curious. I was planning do do this the "proper" way by using factory dimensions - looks like I'll have to do it the the "shade tree machanic" way after all!
Thx - Derek

Derek,
I would guess that the drawing's in error, if your measurements are consistent from block to block. I have never bolted up a block and seen that amount of mismatch. Now I'm going to have to go measure the 3 I have at the house! :marchmell
Remember though that the bolt holes have some slop, intentionally. The dowel pins are supposed to locate the block w/respect to the bellhousing.

I agree about the dowels locating and the bolt/stud holes having some slop - but 1/4"??
I just measured my two blocks (by hand) the dowel holes and the bolt holes just below them are 1.88" center-center. They are not quite vertically in line but near enough for this purpose. The drawing shows their vertical heights to be 1.61 c-c apart.
Can someone elso measure their block(s) by hand and see which of the above they have. Even a scale measurement would help!

I just measured both of mine (because of the dowel issues I'm having), and they both measure 1.88 c-c which does seem to be in direct contradiction to the Power Source manual.
The manual also calls for .625 dowels, but the Buick dowels are .6205  Doesn't matter, my holes are only .501 anyway, so either I have to machine the holes to fit the dowels I have or machine the dowels down (half of their length that is) to fit the holes.
My guess would be your blocks are OK.

Thx Dave - I'll sleep better now.
Also my dowel holes measure .620, presumably for .6205 dowels.
Never believe all you read.

In case anyone interested - there are two more back-of-block holes wrongly dimensioned in the Power Source Manual drawings. The two bolts at 2 and 10 o'clock are shown about 3/4" high. Even a BIG hammer won't correct that much.
I guess 4 correct out of 8 is not bad batting - but I'm wondering whether I've wasted my money buying the Manual and it hasn't even arrived yet!
