View Full Version : Just a suggestion. (For people thinking of upgrading their speakers.)
I notice a lot of people asking..."What rear speakers should I buy?" and "What dash speakers should I buy? Mine are blown."
Here is my suggestion. If you are wanting to upgrade the speakers in your turbo regal or grand national, and you have concert sound, I'd suggest saving the money it would cost to buy new 3 1/2" dash speakers and 6x9's or 4x10's for the rear and spending that extra money on a very good set of 5 1/4" component speakers for the concert sound (door) location.
My favorite setup (for those on a budget) would be the compenents in the concert sound location, and one 12" sub in a sealed or ported box in the trunk. Staying on a budget, I'd go with a nice 4-channel amp that has low and high pass crossovers on both the front and rear channels. I'd use the front 2 channels (set on high pass) to power the set of component speakers, and I'd bridge the rear 2 channels (set on low pass) to power the sub. A 50x4,75x4,or 100x4 amp would do the job. (Depending on the power rating on the speakers)
I've found this to be a relitively inexpensive way to have a clean sounding system. It probably won't win national competitions, or shake the earth with bass, but it should sound suprisingly good.
Just my opinion,
Ross

Good post, I have CC and there are seps in there now. Going to pull them out and go w/Q series MB Qrts up front and one 10w7 JL Audio Sub w/some rear fill speakers and a JL 500/1 and 400/4 amps I think. Hey, is that a Pantera near your car?

Yeah. That's a pantera.
I drive my car about once or twice a month, so I didn't want to spend a lot on a system.
I went w/:
pioneer cd player. - aprox. $140
Polk 5-1/4" - $99 (replacing soon w/ some good compenents)
A Planet Audio 50w X 4 amp. - $140
1 Sony XPlode 12" sub w/ sealed box - $50
Again, it's not earth shattering, but it sounds pretty dang good.

I drive mine a little more than that in the summer time. Gonna start this soon as spring's right around the corner and I got the shit all apart now!

I agree with this post, but I would like to amend it with some of my own findings, I have an older JVC head unit and a 2-channel MTX amp with high pass filter, which I use to drive 8000-series 5-1/4" components. I run an Infinity Basslink powered subwoofer in the trunk, it's very compact and has excellent responce and volume. The whole system takes almost no space up in my trunk, and sounds good. Plenty of "pound" for me.
Would it be better to mount the midrange in the concert sound location and maybe place the tweets up in the dash where the stock 3-1/2's go? Should get OK imaging off of the windshield, no? I just got sick of replacing 6x9's, which seem to go bad on me at an alarming rate, and I had the door panels off so I removed some of the reinforcing materials to let the sound flow unimpeded.

Well, here's something that I would not have thought of or done most likely. But since the car was like this when I bought it. I like it a lot. Check it out, see if you can spot the mod. Imaging is pretty good. I had MB Quarts w/a 5.25 in the door and 1" tweet in the dash. Was very bright for my liking. Right now this car has BA seperates in it, dont know the model, have to open it up and check, but they sound nice. Not sure what kinda power they can handle but my JL Audio 5/500 will be pushin over 100wts to the fronts so I have to see whats there...

Nice tweet location! I've thought about doing something like that, but I don't wanna cut my door up. A nice graphic EQ could take some of that brightness out, but I hate EQ's myself, steals the "soul" of the sound.

Yea, that's why *I* would not have done it. But the good thing is that the upper panel is unmolested..just the lower was mod'd and that is the easier of the 2 to find. Especially since that chrome matte finish is very hard to find on the uppers for an 8000 mile car. I dont think I'd find another like it to replace the uppers. The lowers are the same from any maroon int.
I do like the switch down hear the door lock as well...it's more functional there really...right next to the stock one.

That is cool were you put that tweater at. I have an Eclipse head unit.....$240. Should have got a cheap Pioneer and some decent speakers. Because now I need to get speakers to handle the Eclipse unit. It is good to know that the 5 1/4in speakers are the ones to replace first for the best sound. Good thread, never thought I would find myself in the audio section but this thread is exactly how I look at stereo equipment for my car.
Doesnt have to out bump the ricer next to me, just has to be loud enough that I can hear my music over his. Just tough trying to get over the size of those wings, though.:)

Do you have concert sound or no?
Sorry to drag up an old thread, but... I will anyway. :)
What can one do if there are standard door panels, and not CS?? I'm finding that my options, due to the depth, are extremely limited.
