View Full Version : Rear suspension question
I'm looking at rear suspension upgrades in the near future and I think I know what I want but I'd like advice. First I wanna state that this is a pure street car and will most likely never have slicks bolted to it and I highly doubt I'll even go with drag radials. I hate wheel hop so I'm gonna buy the HRParts upper AND lower boxed control arms with poly bushings. But on a street car is there any need for me to buy the upper adjustables? I wouldn't know how to tinker with it anyway. Also I was wondering what I would gain with the HR sway bar versus the stock one for mainly street cruising. With street tires that are just gonna spin like crazy anyway and a really tight posi would I see a noticeable gain in traction with an aftermarket bar? I believe in spending money once in a certain area and doing it right the first time so if I bought a bar I'd pay out the wazoo for the HR one (i've heard nothing but good news from those that have used them). I do think that I could spend $500 on something better than a sway bar for my particular application, but I don't know crap about this stuff so help me out and spend my money for me.

Excellent choice in parts. I'd go w/ the adjustable uppers and longer lowers if you dont mind spending the extra coin. With the adjustable uppers, you can set em once and be done with it. With fixed uppers, your at the mercy of hopeing they'll fit perfect in YOUR car. Get yourself a set of air bags and a pinion snubber if you want and you've got a first class setup. As far as the sway bar, I dont know personally, but I'm going a similar route w/ a pro-mod style bar. It welds to the frame and links to the rear. Just a different way to skin a cat.
Good Luck

Are you gonna drag race it in street trim or just bomb around on Saturday night cruises and stop light encounters?

On my GN I had solid lowers, new bushings in the uppers and an ATR swaybar. Took off great on the street and the track. If a guy wanted to save a little money you could box your own lowers and install new bushings. IMO...there is no need for adj. uppers on a street car, but I'm sure opinions will vary.
Well it may go down the track once or twice BUT it will be true street trim on street tires. I'm mainly wanting to get the best traction for the saturday night street cruising and I'm not as worried about track performance. I think instead of buying a bar I'd be better off with an alky setup so it could pull like crazy at the top end and not worry about the launch as much. Also I heard that you don't want the longer lowers for the street but I don't know. I know I could box them myself and save a bit but by the time I get the poly bushings in it I feel i'd be better off to just buy some. I'm lazy anyway and I'm not all that good at fabrication. Any opinions are welcome. Thanks for your input.

i just made a post here, and on my screen it showed a similar thread so i feel that i should post and bring yours back to the top-
i live in overland park, see that you live in north east kansas, Do i know you :fragez:
from what ive seen on alot of cars here in KC, if you just want a street car and not really worried about perfect 60 foots at the track, just box your stock upper and lower control arms, and replace the bushings. it wont cost you too much at all, and i can hook you up with a experience welder to get them done- slap on some nitto drag radials, they hook up pretty good.
im doing my rear here soon, should have the parts left over to swap onto your car if your interested-
email me or call me, maybe we can hook up BRYAN WANNER 913 888 4899

Well first off you don't know me because i'm new to the TR world, but I recognize your usermane from TB.com so I kinda know who you are. I live up on highway 36, close enough to Nebraska that I can smell 'em. Next to the town of Seneca. I've pretty much decided on buying the hrparts arms but if you've got a set of home boxed ones with poly bushings cheap i'd think about it. My uncle has a welding shop so I could do my own, but i'm just lazy and I figured i'd have enough into them I could almost buy aftermarket. It's good to know there's a TR mechanic in the area because I still don't know crap about them. Maybe after I sort some crap out on this thing you could give me some pointers. Thanks for your reply.

no problem bob, i may have spoken to you on TB then.. i have a turbo regal from seneca kansas that still has the decal on the decklid, and remember emailing or speaking to someone from that town-
good ole US36- i just took the drive to chillocothe MO from KC yesterday, totally out of the way from you, but still the same US36 on opposite sides of ST. JOE-
go and buy pauls upper and lowers, or just buy his lowers and box your uppers, any way that you decide to do it, they have to be done because the rear hops pretty bad when you dont.
HOTCHKISS sells those bushings too, id get the poly graphite bushings so they dont squeek, poly urathanes may squeek do to no grease-
paul from HRPARTSNSTUFF sells some awesome parts! sooo many decisions!
let me know if you ever need anything for your car, i have alot of these cars and parts, and stuff,... and i work on them too, even over the phone

Just out of sheer curiosity what dealership sticker does that TR have on it?
By the way I actually live in the town of Baileyville but I'm always in Seneca. I'm really surprised that someone knows where this place is.

says RICK HONEYMAN on the decklid-
ive got some of the paperwork on the car from the original owner, id have to look it up, last name featherstone or something... been awhile
BW
Rick Honeyman owns the Ford dealership in town, my buddy works for him.
I was hoping it was from Nemaha Valley Motors, as my mom is part owner of the place (dodge/gmc dealer). If you wanted to look the owners name up it would be kinda neat to know if I haven't bugged you enough already.
Was one of your cars at the car show there a couple weeks ago? A few friends went to it and said they saw some TR's. They were impressed.
If you are ever in the area and see an orange and gray syclone and a GN running around together.....try and catch us!

Actually i was supposed to have one of my cars in the show with those guys, but i guess i could put it as.. "the paperwork never made it to me before everyone else turned THEIRS in"... so i was left out and the cars sat at home....
next year will be a better turn out with more cars there most definitley!
those cars are raced AND shown, and 3 out of 4 made it to BOWLING GREEN KENTUCKY for the buick nats TO RACE and SHOW :applaus:
anyway, you should try and make it to the nationals to see about 300 or so turbo regals this may

I'd say save your money and just get a set of boxed lower arms. The ATR and the H&R swaybars aren't going to give you much more than oversteer. I don't think you'll need uppers, when you launch, the lowers flex because the axle is compressing the stamped arms. The uppers are just there holding it together, they just get pulled on and therefore do not flex as much. And my experiance with poly bushings is very squeeky, but I like them, but they're not all that greater than rubber. Just another point of view...
